Default Gear Replacement

Hi everyone,

I have a 2005 dodge ram 1500 4.7 with the 3.92 gear ratio. The rear diff was making a whining noise, then unfortunately the rear wheels locked. It turns out the pinion bearings broke and jammed the gears...ohh also it popped out the driveshaft too. I got a master overhaul kit and let the mechanic do it. Today I got the car back, but its still whining, I asked him and he said its because the gears are eaten, he said he closed the gaps, but there is little play with the gears. I'm scared to drive it any further, because I don't want to damage the bearings again and have to buy another one. Also i told him to remove the LSD before it causes any trouble. Now i have to get new rear gears. But in rockauto, I can only find the 3.90, can i put 3.90 for the rear, and keep the 3.92 front? Will it damage anything? Also, since it got overhauled, should I get an install kit if i get new gears? Thanks

I think the AMC's are really 3.90 (39/10). I think the old Dana's did have a 3.92 (47/12). You should be able to verify this with the places that sell them.

I don't think it will make a difference either way if you are only using 4x4 in off road areas. But I think you will find the 39/10 gears is what you have in there now. Was there a tag on the differential?

1. Don't mix and match gears unless you want to spend more money later on. 2. Only let installers who have done Ram gears multiple times work on your truck. Apparently our trucks require a special touch and practice in order to get the gears set right the first time.

If the ring and pinion were replaced, the tech may not have set up the pinion depth correctly. And that will cause a whining sound. Do you know if the old pinion was -0 or +1. And what was the new ring and pinion if you know.

When the mechanic did the overhaul, he said that I have to get new gears and that if he put the old gears, it would whine. Its a pretty loud whine. I dont know much about differentials, so i dont know the spacing. He's done gear swaps for silverados and gms but not sure about dodge. He said i can drive the car with the whine and it wont damage the bearings. Is it ok? ohh also the build sheet of my car says its 3.92. Thanks
