Default 2002 specific questions - engine swap (know about matching tone wheel)

Hi All,

I'm helping a friend who had the infamous engine sludge / catastrophic failure in his 2002 4.7 1500. My aim is to help him replace the engine at a reasonable cost.

After some internet research I've come up with the following...

I have to determine whether he has the 16t or 32t tone wheel. I will do this by checking the PCM for the 3 or 4 connector configuration. No big deal.

However, I read a couple of posts on other sites that alluded to the fact that there are unique, one year only engine configuration features on the 2002 Dodge 4.7 RAM. To support this assumption, I just got off the phone with a guy who was selling a 4.7 on Craigslist. Funny enough he just transplanted a 2002 Durango 4.7 into his 2002 RAM 1500 (both 16t) and he says the engine cranks but will not start. Needless to say he is not happy. Especially since a tech at a Dodge dealer assured him the replacement engine would be compatible with his PCM, wiring etc.

So, aside from matching the tone wheel...

  1. Is the 2002 4.7 RAM cam timing setup (or anything else) unique to this year?
  2. Am I limited to using a 2002 RAM 4.7 and excluding every other version, model, manufacturer and year of this engine as a replacement?
  3. Can someone tell me how to determine if the engine is an EGR or a no EGR model?
Thanks!

There was no egr until 05, I cant tell you anymore than that. If possible find another 02 4.7, or rebuild it from the bottom up if you plan on keeping the truck for a while.

Good advice...thank you.

I just got off the phone with a large rebuilder who does alot of the 4.7 engines.

According to him the 2002-2003 RAM can have either the 16t or 32t tone ring. Checking the PCM will determine what you have.

EGR didn't happen until sometime in the '04 engine.

I've decided to go with a rebuilt engine that has had improvements made to prevent the sludge issue and other flaws. The couple hundred more in cost is worth it, plus a generous warranty on parts and labor. Just have to decide on who will do the transplant. Recommendations in the Northern NJ area are appreciated.

Thanks again for the responses.

See attached for Tone Ring tooth count determination.

I have heard that some 2002s have 16 and some have 32, so make sure it did indeed come from a 16 t vehicle. Also i put a 2000 motor in a 2002 ram, so I believe that any 16 t 4.7 will work

Yeah...what's ur point? I was saying to make sure your donor vehicle matches, since u can't just rely on the year in making a determination. Just don't make the mistake of relying on the person ur buying it from to know if the tone rings match.

I posted that information after a lot of research, and confirmation from multiple installers. While I appreciate feedback, why would you post info you "heard"?

Well... Unless you receive your information via osmosis, you also "heard" the information that was spoken to you. I have actually replaced several engines in rams between 2000-2003. I am sure I know more about these engines than you due to my firsthand experience. And the information I "heard" was the same thing that your "expert" installer told you, that some 2002 year models were 16t and some are 32t, so that info was not even contrAry to what you wrote. It's funny that after all of your intense research that you do not even know that you can use other model year engines. Like I said, I used a 2000 Durango engine in a 2002 ram. I thought that your post "did you read the post above yours" had a certain tone to it and your reply made me certain of it. There are many things that I know nothing about but I am not going to act like I am clueless about something I have intimate knowledge of. I welcome your Next demeaning smartelic comment

And why would you be so condescending to someone trying to help you out. If your so damn smart why are you asking for peoples help on the Internet. If anything I just confirmed what you "heard" concerning the tone ring. Makes no sense, maybe you are on the rag and just taking it out on innocent people lol.
