Default Front Rotor Temperature

Just curious on this question. On average how hot should the actual Front Rotor pad area and hub area get on a 10 mile or less round trip to the grocery and liquor stores with an average amount of braking? Should the hub area be to hot to touch for even second or less?

Temps in the area are a cloudy 64 with 73% humidity.

It really depends on several factors: road conditions, weather, traffic, truck vs car. It also depends on the rotor construction.

Doesnt matter how hot or cold it is outside. In 10miles a rotor will melt the skin on your fingers if you touch them.

You hit your brakes more than you think and they stay hotter than you think even after driving and letting the air cool them.

They hit that initial very hot temp and it takes ALOT to get them up higher.

Ok, dug into the brake temperature issue a bit more yesterday as the rim around the lug nuts is too hot to touch as well, I mean you cant hold your hand on that portion of the rim or the spokes going out to the wheels for more than a second. The lower piston on both front calipers has frozen and must be creating drag between the pad and rotor.

Besides rebuilding the calipers that are already on there does anyone have any suggestions on a new caliper brand to use besides OEM Mopar part #'s 68157610AA @ $111.07 & 68157611AA @ $139.07.

No, but with shipping there is only about A $5.00 difference in pricing with MoparPartWorld being the cheaper. Thanks though.

I would check rockauto, looks like could be a lot cheaper there. You could also consider breaking them down, cleaning them out yourself if $ is tight. Never done it on these trucks but should be possible.

So, you are saying that you can't compress the lower pistons?

Just make sure you pull off the slides and scrape underneath them. Then, once re-installed after you've cleaned those as well, you should put a dab of caliper grease on them as well. Only a dab on each brake corner.

If those slides are goobered up or there is significant rust behind them, your pads will not settle back and will constantly ride the rotor.
I've taken apart many sticking brakes to find the caliper has rust and build up behind the slides thus pinching the brake pads in place and not allowing free movement.
