Default Whining noise

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500. Its making a faint whining noise under the hood. Never had any major problems with it. Theres no problems as far as acceleration or anything. Any suggestions?

Does it whine when the truck is stationary or only when moving? Does it change either pitch or loudness with engine speed? After these simple questions other will be able to provide more direction of where to look for the source of the noise.

Its a faint whine while stationary, can barely hear it...when the engine is revd and while accelerating driving, the pitch gets louder.........almost sounds like it has turbo.........or also mimics the whine of the stereo amplifier through the speakers........its definately not that......discon ected all of that to make sure........

How long as it been since you change your belt? I would investigate the pulley and belt driven accessories

Water pump is also a possible suspect.

mine did that and it was the rear bearing in my alternator, took the alt apart, went down to bearing supply and got a new bearing for less then 10 bucks... this was after I put on new pulley bearings

Pull your serpentine belt off and check all pulleys for play, or roughness when turning by hand. If the belt hasn't been replaced in a while, or it looks in rough condition you can try replacing the belt as well.

If you suspect belt, you can run a bar of soap on it while the engine is running, you'll slowly hear the whine go away. It will come back but it can hep diagnose a bad belt.

I 2nd the waterpump suspect.Grab the waterpump pulley and see if it has any play/movement.It's better to change that out before it craps out on the highway, and as suggested check all the other belt/pulley accessories.

I appreciate all the suggestions and will get to working on all. The belt is still original. Truck just hit 95000 miles. The pulleys seem more logical but all pretty much does need replacing and a good tune up. Thanks again, will post the issue once I find it!
