Switching to synthetic 4.7
So the truck broke 100K miles. Actually she's at 103K right now. Iv been using mobil 1 dino oil at 3000-3500 mile oil changes. I bought some super tech 5w30 at walmart, full synthetic and I plan on changing it over to that. I just wanted to know other peoples experiences with synthetic on a 4.7, and also wanted to know how long this particular oil might last between oil changes. I read in passenger cars people using this as a 5K change oil but this is a truck. Anyhow, any input would be helpful thanks.

I have a 07 with the 4.7. my truck has around 120,000 miles on it and Ive been using synthetic probably since it had 30k. I have been using Pennzoil synthetic because I work at a Chrysler dealership and been getting it with a discount.
I will be making the switch back to Mobil1 synthetic, since I've always liked that product and started out using it.
As for changing the intervals of oil changes it all depends on what you want to do. Many people have no issues going past 3,000 miles, but I stick to that even with synthetic. It all comes down to what you feel like doing.

I noticed I get the residue under my oil cap too. Not much though. And no sign of anything in my anti freeze. I figured id give this super tech stuff a try. If it looks rough at 3K miles ill probably change it then. Iv been using conventional mobil 1, the last oil change I used a synthetic blend mobil 1 but Iv been wanting to try a full synthetic without the full synthetic price tag. Haha.. At 4 something a quart for a synthetic oil you cant beat for off the shelf pricing. Does everyone use the mopar oil filters? I haven't tried anything else and figure its not that big of a deal.

Ya gotta be careful with a full synthetic on a high mileage (80k+) that's never seen synthetic.
Synthetics tend to flush the contaminants that have hung to surfaces better. I've seen vehicles have the screen completely plug up with crap and not get oil up into the engine. Also, synthetic has much more uniform and SMALLER molecules. Many people say synthetic CAUSES leaks, which is of course not true BUT it will expose leaks because the smaller molecules can get through places your old oil couldn't.
If you want to run a true synthetic, I'd do a half and half high mileage oil with the synthetic (being the same viscosity) and change it sooner rather than later then go to all synthetic and longer change intervals...

I ran the cheapest 10w30 I could buy and went with a 4000 mile oil change interval. My truck saw 6000 rpm's regularly and ran like a champ until I sold it with 117k miles. As long as the engine was taken care of before you got the truck and you keep up on oil changes your gonna be fine. I really dont think spending an extra $20 on every oil change will ever make a difference in the life of your engine, unless of course it is a newer vehicle that calls for synthetic. One thing I did on my truck and I would recommend other 4.7 owners do is to run the oil filter off of a ford ranger 4.0l v6, it is almost twice the size of the stock filter.
