Default rear end trouble

I broke the ring and pinion shaft yesterday. its an 07 dodge hemi 1500 crew cab 4wd truck. what is my gear ratio, and can I get away with just putting in a different ring and pinion or should you do bearings etc. would like to keep the cost as cheap as I can. my truck ha 18" wheels with 305/65r18. what would be the best gear ratio for mileage and some light towing.

I would think you most likely need to replace at least the pinion bearings. You can probably find a used set of 3.90 from someone that has switched to 4.56. The 3.90 is smallest you could consider and probably should be either 4.10 or 4.56.

driving along doing about 100km. then heard a weird noise. coasted in my lane(happened 1/4mile from home). saw drive shaft had fell onto the ground. once I got it in the shop and took the rear diff cover off I could see the spider gears laying in the bottom. the little bolt was broke and that let the spider gear shaft move and it got stuck in ring and pinion gear stopping things dead. and resulting in the shaft snapping off that goes to drive shaft.

Greetings Black Hemi,
Something like that happen to me about 7 mo. ago. I was going about 35mph when it happen. Back wheels locked up, drive shaft dropped out, put a hole in rear-end the size of a coffee cup in the bottom. Dealer could not tell what happen. Whole rear-end was replaced. 4100.00 dollar's. Thank goodness I had taken out a extended war. on drive train.. On the side of the road was oil, bearings, parts of metal housing., etc. I have a 05 1500 Hemi Daytona, 30,000 mi. when it happen... Several things could have happen, clips broke or came off, big nut on rear end was loose, etc.
Hope you have warranty on yours. My truck has nit been dogged. a easy rider. 3.92 4 x 4 SLT standard cab.. By the way dealer wanted to put used rear end in but I said NO... Dodge quit building the 05 rear end So Dodge had one built for me to have the dealer install.. So far so good...
Good luck on your repair.

3.55s. hands down.

I do heavy towing once in a blue moon and I still believe that 3.55s are great!. My Hemi truck with 3.55s man handled my brothers 20,000lb John Deer 450 Dozer plus its 1800lb trailer. His old 92 chev truck with a 350 could barely take it out of a slightly sloped driveway floored, the hemi hooked up & went.
