The fishing line will probably work. I would have some concern - if you really like your paint job - that there might be some abrasion of the string on the paint as you saw it back and forth to slice the badge mounting tape.
Another method that we've had pretty good luck with is using a heat gun. Heat the badge just enough to soften the adhesive on the badge mounting tape and then simply peel off the badge. We use WD-40 to remove the residue.

If you happen to cause any minor scratches to your pain, just use some really fine sandpaper and a buffer to get them out, this is good to do anyway, becase once you debadge the vehicle, you can still see where the emblems were in certain light, the sanding and buffing will eliminate this problem.
