Default need help with the engine "2004 ram 1500 5.7l hemi"

Hi Guys,

my dodge is 2004 ram 1500 5.7l hemi magnum eight vin number is D.

i had my radiator leaking coolant during one trip from nyc to atlantic city. the engine changed the sound and now it is ticking a lot. "no the hemi tick". i need suggestions on what to do, also the engine has consumed 3 quarts of oil in 2200 miles the oil was 5w30 :

my options as i am thinking now are:

1 rebuild engine.
2 crate engine
3 used engine
4 re-manufacture engine

please help as this is the first hemi i have and dont know what is really the best way.

best regards,
Tim

Wow.

I think first, I would do a compression test, and see what the numbers look like. That will tell you the condition of the engine. (for the most part) Think I would also check the PCV system, and make sure it is working properly. If the valve failed, it may just be sucking oil right out of the engine.

thanks for he reply,

the engine had 97-107 psi on the pistons like a year ago. if the valve failed would it make the engine tick very hard?

Tim

Woah. That's really low. I think minimum spec for those is 100 PSI......

A broken valve spring, or bent pushrod, would certainly give you a tick. If it dropped a valve, it would make some truly rude noises...... and you would have a dead miss on that cylinder.

Are you planning on doing the work yourself? Or paying someone else to do it?

All the peripheral stuff that doesn't come with the motor, you simply swap over from the original motor.

If you are going to pay someone else to do it, the crate motor will likely come out cheaper. If you do it yourself, to do it "right", you may end up spending just as much as if you had just bought the crate motor.

That said, I think I would spend some more time on diagnosis, before spending several thousand dollars.....

No i don't have the space to do it myself i will sent it to a garage. i also got an offer from jasper for a re-manufactured engine in the 5-6K all included tax shipping etc cheaper . i found a garage in nyc that will do the swap for around 800-100$. what do you guys think. Anyone know any good but not very expensive garages to do the swap in NY-NJ area. the truck still runs so i can move it there.

PS:

Jasper says they have fixed some known issue with the 5.7 hemi engine so i think i might go with them. Any ideas about it. Do you guys know for any other reputable places to get the engine?

regards,
Tim

As HeyYou said, I'd spend a little more time diagnosing the existing problem. Could be something simple or a fix that is much cheaper that the money you are looking at spending here.

yes am tempted for that too but its consuming oil and the compression is not good as HeyYou mentioned and it was like that last year. if i open the engine it will be like 200-300$ i think and maybe end up replacing some other parts due to the ram running low on water/oil. what do you guys think the damage can be. lifter etc ??

Maybe i am running fast but the garage i sent it said to me that they needed to open the engine and maybe there was a valve issue, but they needed to open the engine. how much does it cost to open the engine and check it out approximately ??

regards,
Tim
