Default best motor oil for Hemi 130.000 miles

hello guys,

i came back to you because I would like to know witch motor oil specifications should be used for my 2005 ram 1500, 5.7 Hemi.

i have bought it several months ago, and a API SN 5w/30 was used. Recently have bought the Mopar MAxPro 5w/20 but I am not totally happy of it. On cold start, my engine knocks during 15,20 seconds and after no problem. Thats probably due to old engine.

I wonder if I should replace it by the previous 5w/30 but what kind of oil, and spec? remember that my engine is not new and have 130.000 Miles. Thanks for your comments.

Here in Belgium, we dont find Purple oil. We can find Castrol Edge, Long life, mobil 1....

The Guy from Belgium.

Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic. Assuming that is the weight recommend for the engine. I know some of them can be REALLY picky about oil viscosity.......

It is. I use the Mobil 1 high mileage 5W-30 in mine with over 150,000 miles on it.

5w20 is the recommended oil for the 5.7.

Correction, it is the recommended oil for 2005 and newer 5.7. That's only because Mopar wanted the same oil for the 5.7 across the board and the MDS 5.7's (MDS 5.7's require it) were introduced in the LX platform that year. Don't bother arguing the point, I'll take a picture of my original oil cap lol, says 5W-30 (as well as in the owner's manual) right on it.

I'll take your word for it, but I know my 2005 calls for 5w20 (cap, manual, and Chilton's). I'll believe you on the continuity part, for sure. I thought MDS wasn't introduced on the 5.7L engines in any vehicle until 2006, though? Again, could be mistaken and don't worry... I won't argue it (it's too g'damn early for that, anyway :P ).

*EDIT* I did notice that the OP had a 2005, which is why I am/was confident in the oil statement.

*EDIT II* You've got a 2003. I see what you are saying, now. We're both right. As I said, it's too early for me to be internetting...

Hey guys, thanks for your response.

i know that mds was introduced since 2006. I have discuted with many guys here in Belgium and thats strange that many users and professionals have a differents speach. For resume, some of them told be not to change the 5/20, others told me that they use 5/30 without any problems and another pro told me to use the 5/40 because it has 130.000 miles.

actually i have probably a broken bolt on exhaust manifold, that cause the annoying noise on start cold. I have to check that, as my ram dont burn oil or consume oil, i think i will keep this 5/20 for the future. If it start to consume oil, i will consider to go to 5/30 or 5/40.

Rusted/broken exhaust manifold bolts are not rare on these trucks. That's a very real possibility.

The 05 Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300 with the 5.7 have it (have an 05 Magnum R/T). The engine was designed with it in mind, just wasn't used. That's why 03-05 truck blocks and even the mighty 6.1 have the passages and holes for the solenoids, they're just plugged.
