Default fuel tank

Hey guys . I have a 2005 dodge 1500 5.7 . To make a long story short i need a new fuel tank due to major rust around the lock ring of fuel pump . I have searched online but its very confusing what im finding . I believe its a 26 gallon tank . The vincoder says 34, 26 gal (26.0 min/35.0max ) . Any suggestions guys ? Id really appreciate it . Tim

Either tank will likely fit. Check with your local junkyards, they will probably have several for you to chose from.

Welcome to DF! Check out the third gen ram section.

Why would the tank need to be replaced? Can't you remove & replace the lock ring? Or was the tank neck damaged when attempting to remove the lock ring?

Can you post some pictures? I'm curious what you're facing. Chances are we can help so you don't have to replace the fuel tank.

Drop the tank and drain the fuel. It looks like the lock ring is coated with road grime and mud. Use a brass brush to scrap everything off and maybe blast it with a hose and degreaser. I would suggest coating the lock flange with 30-weight oil or transmission fluid and letting it soak for a while. There is a special tool used to remove the lock ring (I have one) but check locally to see if you can rent one. You might be able to remove the old lock ring with a brass drift. DO NOT use a ferrous tool to remove it as sparks could be generated.

Do you need to replace the fuel pump? If so, pull the pump and wash out the tank (really hit the exterior) and buy a new lock ring. You don't need a new tank.
