Default LED shows 4 wheel drive but it really isn't

So with the winter coming upon us I thought I should make sure my 4 wheel drive is working in my 2005 Dodge Ram SLT with 5,7 hemi. I had the truck in park and turned the switch. It shows it was in 4 wheel drive but for some odd reason when I turned I noticed it really was not in 4 wheel drive. So I put the truck up in the air so all 4 tired where up and started the truck with 4 wheel drive engaged. The front axle is moving but the half shafts are not moving from the front transfer case. So is the front transfer case done for? I don't hear any grinding of gears in the front transfer case. I am just little puzzled...

What year is your truck? 1500? 2500? 3500?

Is there a disconnect on one of the axles in front? If not, then the front diff has some issues.

No disconnect... I was thinking the same thing about front diff has issues. I might pull the cover off next weekend and see what I find and take pictures then update the thread.

If it doesn't make any rude noises...... wonder if the previous owner just removed some parts from it....

It worked fine over the past five years. I just noticed other day it was not engaging but the led light showed that it is ans the dash says it is.

That's just bizarre. Jack up the front, (leave it in 2wd) and turn the front driveshaft by hand. See if anything obvious presents itself. I would suspect something broke, but, I would expect something broken to make all sorts of rude noises as well.....
