Default 4x4 isn’t working

I had a mechanic recently diagnose my truck and he said that the ecu couldn’t even read that the truck was 4x4 any suggestions on what to do next? It’s for a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 4.7 v8 it has an electronic transfer case.

You have the 545RFE. When plugged in, the ECU view should show it, which leads me to believe either a) he doesn't know where to look or b) it has gotten unplugged somehow. Since it's electronic the shift mechanism should be able to be actuated for testing with the proper scan tool.

Oh okay. I have tried to see and locate if something is unplugged under the truck but it doesn’t seem as it is. Would you just recommend taking it to another mechanic?

Okay do you switch the 4x4 by moving the **** on the control panel or the shifter coming thru the floor. If its a ****. Check the wires above the brake brake ratchet. Sometime the wires rub on the ratchet and short out.

I switch the 4x4 with the **** on the control panel and I’ll definitely check that out any other things I should look out for?

I’ve seen some actuator housings on both axle and transfer case crack in plastic areas allowing water and grit to enter end shorting them out
