Give it a shot, and see if it agrees with the gauge. (it should, I think the computer uses the sensor to tell the gauge what to display.....)

Beginning to sound like a blown head gasket though.

You can also check for head gasket failure by running the engine with the radiator cap off. If the coolant is bubbling at the cap then you have a head/head gasket problem.
Pull some plugs and see if you can isolate location.
I think you know that you shouldn't drive the truck if there is gas in the oil. The oil is no longer a lubricant.
