I just popped in a pair of JBL 10's in an under-rear-seat box and a cheap Boss amp. My next move is to replace the door speakers, adding in some passive hi-pass crossovers for each. I doubt that I will change out the head unit any time soon, just because I like the stock appearance and I'm ok with the sound.

Yeah, sometimes changes are better and sometimes, they are just a PITA...

iengle that's exactly what I originally wanted to do. I just wanted to get treble from the front doors, not just bass as it is now. I replaced the front door speakers with 4way speakers not knowing the amp only sends lows to them. If I could have the amp replaced or have the crossover in the stock amp disabled I would be happy. I would like to keep the 7 speaker system also. I just want the sound to be a little more balanced. Right now the only highs (treble)I get are from the dash, everything else are lows. The rear door speakers were replaced but I really don't get the benefit of the tweeters because the front seats block the sound from them. I hope I explained myself without making it to confusing.

the one thing I was impressed with when I bought my truck was the amount of bass those door 6x9s put out...even with the bass setting on 1/2 it's enough to shake my mirrors lol

mpd, I was trying to envision a way to replace the Infinity amp (presumably with some kind of internal preset crossover configuration) with an aftermarket amp. If your goal was to just run full-range to each of the 7 speakers, taking the direct radio output (probably with some hi/low level converters) right into the new amp would be ok. Depending on how you wanted to wire in the dash speakers with the front doors, you would need to be careful that you wouldn't overload the amp's output (combined impedance of the speakers going below the amp's rating -- usually 2ohms).

This would give you full-range output for all speakers and you would probably want to use some passive crossovers for the dash speakers to cut out the lows.

Sorry, not a real detailed description. The more I think about it, combined with your (mpd) admitted lack of experience in wiring, I would suggest finding a good shop to give you something turn key.

Thanks for the input. This is definately over my head. I'll just stop by one of the local shops and asked them. I'm sure i'm not the only one that will be asking questions about the stock stereos in these Rams.

djDaemon:

Do ya know if that covers the audio system in my 2006 RAM 2500? I have the Infinity 7 speaker system with the 6 disk changer/MP3 and Siruis sat built in. I also have the steering wheel radio controls to.

I like this head unit and want to add a sub to my system while retaining the factory head. I would like to add a changer but I don't know if it has a changer plug on the back.

Oh... I don't see it on the diagram you put up, but do you know if there is a 'mute' circuit for a hands free phone system on the radio? My hands free system says that it has a wire that when the radio needs to be muted that it will ground out that wire.

I'm fairly certain it does apply to the 2006.

For the sub, many powered subs and amplifiers (Infinity, Blaupunkt, etc.) have speaker-level inputs, meaning you can just splice into your speaker wires in your door or wherever. And as for the changer, the connection should be straightforward - though I believe you will have to use the mopar changer.

I was hoping to get a 'line level' for the sub as its a cleaner output, less distortion. And the amps I was looking at didn't seem to have the speaker level in.

At installer.com they have adapters to connect factory head units to aftermarket changers. They have several for 2002+ Chryslers, Dodge and Jeeps. You can do like Alpine, Pioneer and Sony changers!!! I don't see how I would change disks with my head unit though.

I think you posted while I was re-editing my post. LOL I also asked:
"Oh... I don't see it on the diagram you put up, but do you know if there is a 'mute' circuit for a hands free phone system on the radio? My hands free system says that it has a wire that when the radio needs to be muted that it will ground out that wire. "

And please iggy my PM I sent ya. Thanks man!

hi/low level converters (line level coverters, whatever) aren't perfect, but they do the job pretty well. I'm currently running one on mine to feed the amp for my subs.
