Default header install ?

I just got my new Gibson headers,http://www.gibsonperformance.com/pro...&model=316#316 and now I am trying to get them installed. The question is, has anybody installed this header or any header on their own? I just came from the local muffler shop and they're quoting me about $240. I would rather pay somebody to do the work (as I am not that mechanically inclined), but $240 sounds steep. I read the instructions that came with the headers, and the install didn't seem too difficult, but I would hate to mess something up by doing it myself. Let me know what you guys think.

Headers, what a bad idea.

If you are going to do it though, get the locking header bolts. Or plan on tightening the mounting bolts to fix leaks. Not worth it to me on a daily driver. I have had the most luck with the split lock design, but I know other types exist.

If you think its a little steep in price, call around and get some other quotes for comparison. If your not very mechanically inclined you might find it to be a bit of a challenge to do on your own.

For the amount u'll gain it's not worth it, I was gonna get a set for my 05 Daytona but im NOT putting out $1300 bucks for long tubes with the y pipe. Instead I went with the Superchips 3815, You would of been better off spending the $400 bucks and felt a diff., but it sounds like you already spent the money on them so save yourself a headache and pay to have them done if you have ANY doubts you can do the job. This way if there's a problem you can just take it back. Also one last tip..... I WOULD NOT use the gaskets, just use HIGH TEMP silicone, I've done ALL 5 of my cars without useing the gaskets and NEVER had a leak !!!

I installed Hedman shorty hedders on mine, and i didnt notice much of a change in performance. Ive had the passenger side gasket bust twice, and its a lot of work to keep changing the gasket. and with an exhaust leak like that...im embaressed to gas it at all....sounds soo bad..not worth the time money or energy...

How so? I've had mine on the truck since around 1k and love them. No leaks, did the install myself, truck felt stronger throughout the entire powerband. Only real world info I can give you on the gains is "the 8.1 Avalanche dyno". It's my bro's truck, 8.1, programmer, CAI and catback. I was dead even with him every time before the headers, and was able to pull 2-3 trucklengths consistently after the install. They are a great mod when you can spare the necessary coin on quality stuff.

BTW, should take a shop anywhere between 3-5 hours for the install, so make sure you check their labor rate to see if they're sneakin in an hour or two on ya.

Hate to say this man but my truck got a lot quicker between 1 and 8 K miles. Most engines pick up power at this pont... not saying you did not pick up anything, just saying it would have happened anyway to some extent.

Default RE: header install ?

i got some long tubes for christmas and i went down to my exhaust guy and he gave me a quote of $260. He estimated a 6 hour install time. That can't be right can it??? He did my exhaust when i first got the truck (put the wrong muffler on) didn't charge me because of his mistake. so technically i'm paying him for the install with his own money so to speak. The only thing he has to do is take off the manifolds and put the headers on, cut another 2 "bungs" for the sensors and then flare/weld to connect them. Just by looking at them the manifolds look like a total bitch to take off and i can't imagine fitting the headers in...
