Default Driving in 4WD Hi Damage?

Wifey had truck stuck in 4WD Hi and drove home about 20 miles on highway mostly - will this damage anything? Road was a combination of wet and dry.

If it still works properly, and doesn't make any rude noises, you are probably OK.

You probably shortened the service life, but if you didn't pop a drive shaft or steering knuckle, most likely not. Don't be too hard on her. I know a bunch of guys who have done that, and it wasn't stuck. Besides, you don't want to sleep on the couch do you? Just tell her it's only a machine, she is more important. I told a girlfriend that once when she totaled my car, right after the last payment. I wasn't happy, especially since she was going REALLY fast, but in the end, cars and trucks, no matter how much you like them, are just metal, glass and rubber.

They are more forgiving than you think.

Probably fine. I'll switch mine on headed up to Big Bear as I approach Running Springs and keep it on til I get back through and that's about 40 miles in patchy dry/wet/icy/snowy pavement.

Thanks for the reply's, drove it today and seems fine although it seemed to be coasting with slightly more resistance but I could be wrong. Shifted in and out of 4WD easily, not sure why she had a problem.

Are these on the fly manual shift in a 3rd gen (2002 Quad Cab) or not? I usually shift from 2WD to 4WD Hi when stopped and then put it into drive and go but was reading some say you can shift on the fly to 4WD Hi at speed.

Can shift on the fly in motion, but in conditions where 4x4 is required you shouldn't be going very fast to begin with. 4-lo needs neutral stationary.

According to theory, you can shift into 4 hi at up to 50 mph..... (though I wouldn't want to be going that fast...) 4 lo, on the other hand, max speed to shift is like 4 mph..... On my truck, (2nd gen....) To get it into 4 Lo, I usually just stick the trans in neutral, foot off the brake, and shove the lever as quick as I can into 4 lo. (4 lo isn't synchronized... so, some gear clashing is expected.)

I use 4low fairly rarely. On my Power Wagon, the 5.88 gears meant I didn't need to and my 4X4 trucks since have had enough grip and torque to do the job easily.
