Default Front axle replacement

A couple weeks ago I noticed I needed to replace the front U joints on both sides of my 04 ram 2500 4x4 5.7. So instead of just replacing the joints. I ordered the whole axle assembly for both sides. Everything went according to plan until I tightened up the axle nuts. When I tightened them the axle came out 1/4 inch on both sides. Now the axle doesn’t seat flush with the housing. Theirs a 1/4 inch gap there now. I kno tht can’t be normal so a little help would be much appreciated.

I would think that so long as the axle nut is torqued to spec, should be ok.

You by chance measure the old axles and the new to verify they were same length?

also is the any “play” between knuckle and shaft?
