i have a 2002 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.9 v8 and both of my reverse lights don't work. I've checked all the fuses and connections and the bulbs are good. I dont know if anyone else has had this problem, ive been told that it is the neutral safety switch, I've also been told that it is the backup light switch. and i was also told they are the same sensor. so how do i know what to get? i figured instead of wasting my time i should ask people with some experience. thanks
They are the same sensor. Easily changed as it's screws into the trans, from the outside.
Thank you, it's frustrating when your trying to figure something out and people tell you 100 different things. I'll try replacing that safety switch and see if that worked

I replaced switch and recheck all fuses and still nothing, I went out and bought a higher quality multimeter and when in reverse the light socket is only putting out .50v and a little black bar shows up on the multimeter? What could that be? I'm desperate.
My Reverse Lights haven't worked since days after buying it new from the dealership. I've been told many times it is the switch (6 speed manual tranny). I eventually wired in a switch (driver's seat) with rear LED lights installed. Requires flipping a switch but sure is handy when hooking up a trailer or working after dark and being able to light up the back side of the truck.

Im thinking about doing something like that cause I've been just turning on my cargo light whenever I back up
A couple other areas to check;
Does the truck have an aftermarket backup camera installed? Reverse wires may have been tapped.
Have you checked the reverse lights for resistors? Someone could have tried LEDs and installed resistors, then replaced the LEDs with incandescent bulbs.

No we've ownes the truck since it was new and my mom hasn't put led in to my knowledge but I will ask, do you know where the resistors are located?
There are a few types of resistors for LED conversions. But you've had since new and did not modify the lighting, then it wouldn't be a problem for you.
I took my multimeter and tested the socket and it was only reading .5v and then I tested the connector and it was reading 12v so I stuck a wire in it and plugged it into a light and it worked. And did same to other side. The part is called the tail light Circuit board. Hope this helps someone. Thanks everybody for giving tips!
