I have an 07 with the 5.9 Cummins and recently when I start the truck the starter just keeps going until it times out after 10-15 seconds or I power cycle the key. If I can cycle the key fast enough the truck will stay running but the starter stops. I have recently installed a new ignition switch in hopes that may fix my issue but the problem persists. Most posts I see about starter issues involve remote start which I don’t have. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Sticking starter relay?

Any idea where it may be? I’ve seen people say there is one as well as people saying it’s not controlled by a relay.

Ok, apparently, there isn't one.... Starter is control by the TIPM..... so, the trick is going to be, seeing if you have power on the starter solenoid wire continuously, even after you release the key. If you have pushbutton start, there is likely some sensor that tells the computer that the engine has actually started... might just be an RPM signal, If the computer is confused about IS the engine actually running..... that may cause it as well. Beyond that, I don't have a clue. I don't work on the newer stuff.

Yea that’s what I’ve read. No starter relay. Would make life easier. I’m throwing around the idea of just running a relay and a push button to start the truck. Just hoping someone has some input and it’s not a costly fix.

Possible causes for "starter does not disengage" listed in FSM are: starter motor improperly installed, starter relay faulty, ignition switch faulty, starter motor faulty.

New ignition switch. No relay. I took the wire going to the solenoid and touched it to the battery and the truck starts with no issues. Must be a problem in the TIPM.

Well, that is not going to be inexpensive....... I am really not a fan of the newer stuff. Attempting to cram as much tech as they possibly can, into very limited space..... Yeah, one simple failure, and it's a several thousand dollar repair bill.

It’s just a work truck for me. I’ll just run a momentary push button to the starter. Still have to turn the key on and then hit the button to start it. $5 switch is much cheaper than getting a new TIPM and having it programmed for the truck. Thanks for the help tho
