Trying to figure out a noise that has been going on for the last month. The noise sounds like im dragging a safety chain when im driving 35mph or faster and can only hear it when your next to another vehicle or bouncing of a wall or median. MY truck is a 03 Ram SLT 4x4.
Hhhhmmmm.... Well, I was thinkin' maybe one of your front u-joints, but, you shouldn't have any, being IFS and all. Might be one of the joints in the driveshafts, or a carrier bearing, if you have one....
I agree with HeyYou to check all of your joints and bearings. Would be a good idea to go ahead and give the wheel a shake to check the tie rods and ball joints as well while you're at it as part of a check up to make sure everything else is healthy.
I don't think I have a carrier bearing since it's a single cab short bed, but would tie rods or ball joints make a chain noise?
Not necessarily but it's probably a good idea to check them anyway as preventative maintenance and greased if they're greasable. U-joints can make all sorts of noises when you go down the road and they're easy to check. Do you hear a clunk when you shift between drive and reverse?
I heard that limited slip rear ends have a retainer clip that becomes problematic sometimes, Im not sure if the 4x4 comes with one or if yours has one though, hopefully someone who knows more about that than me can answer that and if it applies. But easiest thing to do for now is to slide up underneath and give the U-joints a shake and see if they have any play, you can use a pry bar also.
