[quoteno contest, the hemi.

My 4.7 is as fast, maybe faster, than a 5.9.

I have had a 5.9 for 9 years and 131K miles as well as a 4.7 for about a year and 15K miles. The 5.9 was WAY faster and and had WAY,WAY,WAY more towing power. No comparison here. Not even close, even in your dreams

The 5.7 is certainly an improved engine with 8 to 12% better fuel economy
but as far as getting torque to the pavement at the rear wheels
in the critical 1600 to 2400 rpm range
there is at least some evidence that the 5.9 might not be so bad:

http://www.hypertech-inc.com/dynodgtrk.html

look at the "stock" lower rpms portions of the 2002-2003 5.9V8
and compare to the "stock" lower rpm portion of the 2003 5.7V8
...but keep in mind that in 2002 the 5.9V8 got the benefit of the new lower restriction factory exhaust that was designed for the 5.7V8

p.s. sometimes my wife gets jealous when I rub the Ram.....
You know.....my fiance gets the same way. Damn women.
+1, the wife always gets mad when I pay more attention to the truck than her......

As for the topic, The only 5.9l I have come accross only had an exhaust and I mop the floor with them.... I would be interesting to come accross a high modded 5.9.......

My truck with a cam, complete exhaust (headers and all), roller rockers, new gears, and a few other little gyzmos would eat a Hemi, stock to stock you can't compare though, as said the 5.7 has more money into it than the 5.9, more technology, and newer.

It is comparing apples to oranges, someone find out how much it cost to produce the 5.9 and how much it cost to make the 5.7 then use the difference to put mods on the cheaper engine, then race em, see who comes out on top.

a 5.9 would also go four wheeling places where a hemi could not, a hemi is built for more top end, where the 5.9 is the low end
Ridiculous
So your saying that the difference is so large that there would actually be places a 5.9 could wheel that a 5.7 could not?
Come on man.
Your splitting hairs pretty bad.
[sm=confused06.gif].....Really... I don't see any difference in Off road performance...

I agree, the HEMI 5.7 is faster than the Magnum 5.9. I really liked the 5.9 Magnum in my 2001 RAM 1500 Sport 4x4. I started to reply to this article with the intent of defending the Magnum 5.9, but after digging the 2001 Ram Brochure out and looking at the Torque / HP graph and comparing it the the Torque / HP graph of the 5.7 Hemi, The Magnum 5.9 doesn't even have a torque advantage, not even at low RPM's. The Magnum 5.9 did deliver 120hp at 1000 RPM though, the Hemi needs 2000 RPM to develop that 120hp. But its torque that helps you climb hills, not HP, so I don't see how it could help when 4 wheeling.

I'm not into the defending thing and will concede without argument that the Hemi is faster. But the 5.9L is no dog, on the hypertechdyno it shows the 5.9L producing the same tomore torque on all but the factory setting (overall they stay within 7ftlbs torque of each other).

The real advantage I see with the Hemi is better mileage and of course more horsepower at higher RPMs, but the 5.9L pretty much hangs with it until about 4000rpms. And, except when racing when do you ever get your Hemi into those numbers anyway?

The 5.9 torque curve in that picture above is a printing mistake...
it is reversed left to right...this has been discussed many times in the past on dodge forums.

You can prove this to yourself by calculating the torque from the horsepower curve.
