Default MINOR problem shifting out of PARK.

I have noticed a few times when trying to pull my truck out of park, the car will nto disengage and go into reverse or anywhere else. I have only had to turn the truck off and restart once to get it to shift. The other times it has done this it has come out after working the shifter around a little.

What could be causing this to stick?

It sounds like the brake shift interlock solenoid. May I suggest you start by pressing the brake, then trying to place it into reverse. I noticed on mine if I'm in a rush, I'll try to shift just milliseconds (at least that what it seems like) before I press the brake and it will do what you say.

Next time it happens, make sure it is fully in park without any force on the gear selector and let go of the brake, then depress the brake again and shift. If it doesn't work, it is the solenoid.

Also, to keep wear off the parking sprag (sp?) I put my truck in nuetral and put on the e-brake, let the e-brake take the weight of the truck, then go into park. It is especially important when on a hill. Most people really don't care/notice, but I do.

Let us know how everything works out

Ya know Doc....it's little tips and things like you said, about putting the truck in nuetral and put on the e-brake, let the e-brake take the weight of the truck, then go into park, that really do make a difference in owning a vehicle and using it wisely and correctly.

Very good point you made.

I agree with the neutral, then parking brake comment, I've been doing that for years, ever since I saw the part that holds a transmission in Park. Its not very big or strong looking... Anyway, back to your problem. I have also experienced this problem, but usually when I'm in a hurry. I'm not sure about the newer ram's, but most cars are just a cable that disengages the lock on the shifter when you press the brake pedal. I know the new LX cars (300, magnum, charger) are just a plain ol' cable. Does restarting your truck really have an effect on what your experiencing? If it does, I wonder what it causing the difference. I have seen some cars loose the function of the cruise, or PRNDL21. I've seen some where the indicator will not show up (the box that surrounds the gear your in on the dash). Hope you figure it out.

That's real strange................my cruise sometimes acts up. When I hit set, even thought the cruise light is "on", it fails to set the speed.
When I check the error code thrown, using the "ignition switch key method" and the error shown in the oddometer display, it shows P0585.
Whats that mean............?

Thanks Abarmby. I do take the extra ounce of prevention when I can. It is the little things that add up to still having a good truck in 10 years instead of a thrashed and trashed heap, regardless of brand. I plan on keeping 'Trinity' around for a long time.

You can also keep your foot on the brake, put it in park, and put the emergency brake on before letting your foot off the brake.
