downsizing from 20s
I have an 04 1500 with the factory 20s. I have finally decided that I want to go to a smaller wheel and have a nice off-road tire. I have looked around a bit and this is what I came up with. smallest wheel would be a 17 x 8. tire to go with that wheel would be 285/70. Now I dont want to lift the truck but would like a nice beefy offroad tire. So how big can I go with stock suspension and not screwing anything up.
thanks for any input. Also if anybody is interested in the factory 20s with tires, fronts have 18 K and the rears were just replaced (wheel and tire).

RE: downsizing from 20s
I went from the 20's down to 17" with 33" Pro Comp A/T tires. Couldn't be happier. I've seen people on here fit 33" tires with no problem on stock suspension (4x4). I put a 3" body lift on mine. I went with the A/T over the Mud Terrain for practical reasons (50,000 mile warranty, for one), but if you wanted to do it, I'm sure a nice set of mud tires would look awesome.

RE: downsizing from 20s
wow, great response, does anyone have pics....especially RockRam( u do still have stock suspension right) As for my 20s, My truck is in the shop due to a recent accident, however like I said the front wheels and tires have about 18K on them and due to the accident two new wheels and tires are going on the back. I will get pics as soon as the truck is done (its been about a week and a half already).

RE: downsizing from 20s
Hey there, good choice going from the "flower power" 20s to the 17s. I am currently looking into a 2nd gen ram, but my parents own an 04 ram with the stock 17s and stock rugged trail T/As, but I hear 33s fit fine. Go with those. You'll loose on flex running bigger tires, but gain ground clearance and be able to do alot more. It's all for what you use it for.
