Default synthetic...

Hello... I have a question, In a previous post I asked if if useing syntetic oil is worth the xtra cost in the engine, Now I'm consideing swapping out booth the rear and front diff, transfer case, manual trans ( uses chrysler automatic trans fluid ) with a syntetic oil..

I'm interseted in improving mileage and performance in a 2500 ram with a 5.7, I'm not expecting un realistic mileage, just a improvement for my inital investnment.

Using convental oil I can change my fluids twice for the price of one synthetic change.

Is it worth the extra cost?

Depends on you. Conventional oils do a great job and its cheap. Synthetic oils do a much better job and cost more. Synthetics hold up better under extreme conditions (heat & pressure). You need to determine what is best for your truck, based on how you use your truck.

If you decide on synthetic, do yourself a huge favor and sign up to become a "Preferred Customer" with Amsoil. Then you can order all the oil you want at a very good price and have it delivered to your door within a couple of days. Why pay $6 -$8 a quart for Mobil 1, Royal Purple, etc., when you can get Amsoil for $4.75 a qt.?

You'll have others chime and swear that this brand or that brand of oil is best or better. That's their opinon. You need to decide on your own. Amsoil has been doing synthetic longer than anyone else. Thats why I use it. I'm currently using 5w-20 engine oil and 75-90w Severe Gear in my 2006 Quad Cab. I use their 5w-30 in my '97 GMC.

I do not work for Amsoil or have any other interest in them. They make a great product and you have the ability to buy it at a fair price. Bottomline.

An episode of Trucks! on SpikeTV showed a comparison on the dyno. I don't remember the exact results, but they showed an improvement in whatever truck it was switching from conventional to synthetic in the engine, transmission, and differentials. Personally, I switched to synthetic after my 2nd oil change, so the truck was just done breaking in, so I'm not sure if the 1/2 MPG gain was from break-in or the oil. Honestly, you probably won't notice a difference that way. I believe it will make my engine last longer. I also use the K&N oil filter (part HP-2004 on my truck), which is $8.99 from jegs for the same reason - I think it'll make my engine last longer and hold up to harsher conditions (driving or weather).

I use Mobil 1, which I buy at Wal Mart for about $20 for 5 quarts. It used to be less than 20, but it's been 21 or 22 lately. But they don't always have it in stock so the other poster's comments about Amsoil's preferred customer program might work for you.

I'm with hoopdad. I use Q for 4x4's and SUV's because I want my engine to last me a long time. It's already got 134K on it and it's always had some kind of synthetic in it and it still runs strong. I'm gonna put Royal Purple in the diff's and tranny as soon as I get around to it. I don't expect MPG, just longer life.

Your rear end already has synthetic in it. If you want synthetic everything else and can do the work, go for it. At least I get the peace of mind knowing what was done and how (and that it was done right). I figure $25-$28 every 5K miles is extremely cheap compared to the cost in gas that it took to rack up those miles....

for the block, ive been using mobil 1 with 10,000 mile oil changes for a long time. Always had healthy high mileage engines. I work at a mercedes dealership and they do the same, either a 10k or 15k hange on mobil 1.

Always use mobil 1. Used it in my old El Camino, my Race car, and now my truck. El Camino had 174k on it, and my race car had 140k on it and still went into the 11's @ over 115mph when I sold it. Proven winner in my book.

5qts. containers of Mobil 1 @ walmart for about $22. You'll hear stories of guys running Amzoil for 25K between oil changes using bypass filters in addition to your regular filter. With a good filter you should be able to extend changes up to 10,000 miles, I'm not recommending or suggesting this I'm just saying that it's very possible. In Europe they mainly run synthetic oils and only change their oil once a year depending on driving habits(europeans drive considerably less then americans).

Also, not all synthetic oil is a true synthetic. Amzoil, Royal Purple, the real high end stuff has different esters and compounds which help the oil hold up better, I believe they are type III synthetics. Most of your comercial synthetics are type II and start with a different base then type III, both are excellent for your vehicle but the type III is better for extreme heavy duty use, such as NASCAR, off road racing, heavy hauling etc. For every day usage, type II is excellent for your vehicle.

Shell RotellaT in the blue bottle is also an cost effective option, about $16 a gallon ($4 a quart) at Walmart, it's safe to use in ANY automotive engine yet is marketed towards the big trucks/diesel. So far I can only find it in 5-40W though.
