'02 1500 Quad cab (black) paint flaking off
Hello all, I'm new to the forum. I'm a member of other forums and there is always great information and very knowladeable members.
Question, My black 2002 Ram 1500 is having a major paint flaking problem. I have HUGE spots on the hood, roof, outside door jams and top of the bed. I'm at a loss for words. I bought it new and wax it about every 2 months. The problem started and within no time flat it spread. I'm taking it down to my dealer tomorrow for them to review and "see what chrysler will do for me". My bumper to bumper warranty is up but my father tells me that Dodge should warrant the paint for 5 years (which I am within). Has anyone else had a similar experiance ? If so, was it resolved or was it your problem ? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks !

You know, now that you mention it, i did have a couple of chips on the hood, but i purchased touchup paint, and took care of it myself.
I don't think they did a good job painting these vehicles. Let me know what happens when you take it to the dealership. I would really like to know what they have to say.

Also Hemi_Cali is experiencing the same thing with his truck. The paint around the door sill is starting to Bubble. I don't know what year his vehicle is. He indicates that he plans to contact the dealership about his problem. He has also posted on this forum.
Who knows, Maybe if enough of us started contacting Dodge they will take care of the problem.

YEAH [:@] i do its not chipping but it looks like someone got a can of gray spray paint sprayed over it from the distance untill u look close and you can see its the primer. its on the top of the tail gate top of the right rear window and under. also there little specs all over that looks like the white dust from waxing. but im am getting the whole truck repainted soon since i know some ppl and all i have to pay for is paint.
DC will cover corrosion perforation, but that's about it, unfortunately. I think they should own up and repaint any vehicle that peels within 10 years if properly cared for.
Let us know what happens. This will be interesting.

Update - I brought the truck to dodge today. The service manager came out with a camera to take pics and the first thing out of his mouth was "WOW". He asked if I had an estimate. I said no, I didn't feel an estimate was nessassary because I expected dodge to cover the damage. He then gave me a buisness card to a body specialist to take the truck to for an estimate for them and told me he couldn't tell me what dodge would do for me, being the truck is a year out of warranty. " Maybe they will pay for it, maybe they wont. Maybe they will pay a portion in a good faith gesture." I brought the truck to the body specialist for the estimate and his first words after seeing it were "What year is this truck ?" - It's a 2002 - "HOLY S@#% !! " This is definatly a clear coat problem caused at the factory. He then showed me areas that to me looked ok but I must not have the eye for paint. He was showing me the areas that were going to go next. The specialist couldn't give me the estimate on the spot. He told me that he would have to list out all the work to be done as most of the truck was in need of painting. He's faxed the quote to dodge late today and I should hear back from the dealer tomorrow. I'll update the post when I know the outcome.
well sounds like the dealer is at least stepping up and trying to do something to help you instead of blowing you off like some will do. hope you get it resolved and everything comes out great. just remember if the dealer replaces it for you or pays the body shop for you not to settle with anything less than youre satisfied with. if they do a sorry job dont hesistate to make them redo it as many times as it takes for them to do an acceptable job on it. best of luck getting it fixed.
Thanks for the update. Did they even say what caused the paint to do that? I know you mentioned that it probably happened at the factory, but what, at the factory caused the paint to do that? Are they going to strip all of the old paint, and then repaint it?
