Default K&N Filter only versus K&N C.A.I.???

Looking at the 06 1500 5.7 air box there isn't much restriction!? It looks like it has nice flow and volume, so I dropped in a K&N filter tonight (was on sale at the local auto shop). Will test it out this weekend.

Anyone think the CAI is the way to go on the 06's? This is the best looking airbox I've ever owned.... quite open!

Unless there is some restriction in the hose going to the intake, but I doubt it.

I know the box only sucks in from that plastic tube, but is that the difference, an exposed filter, versus one in a box with a smaller opening?

Maybe I can modify the stock box somehow? It's a lease, so I wouldn't want to chop it up to much...

Curious on your thoughts...

Get the CAI. There have been quite a few dyno's (one by me) that showed a 3 to 4hp loss using only the K&N filter vs. the factory paper filter.

I would go with the C. A. I. I had one on my 99 Ram and it performed much better than when I just put a K&N filter on it to start with!

Come on, you have to be joking.....A loss of HP after installing a K&N Drop in Filter? I find that hard to believe.......
According to their website, you're supposed to have an increase in HP.

A loss? That is hard to believe. But.. if you have the dyno sheets to prove it, I guess it's true? I know on some motorbikes this is the case because it changed the airflow in the box... velocity?

I can appreciate the info on the 99, but I am curious if the airbox has changed since then. Mine looks wide open without restriction. The intake the box is quite large. Was hoping for some feedback/dyno info from the 2006's.

It has been stated many times that you lose HP's from a drop in K&N... CAI is the way to go.

I don't have the dynos to prove what gets gains and what gets losses, but everything I've heard says that a C.A. I. is the way to go. I could tell when I put the C. A. I. on the 99, but I couldn't tell any difference with just the filter. No increase in mpg, and no noticable difference in power. Get the C.A.I.

I already got the drop in filter, I needed a clean filter anyway. I didn't want any extra noise up front which some say you get with the CAI.

After looking at the 06 air box, I have a hard time believe there would be a difference. K&N most likely won't say there isn't a difference if they are selling CAI's for 06's..

Judging by how fast my stock air filter became dirty, I'd say this new air box has great air flow.

I'll drive it tomorrow for the first time with the drop in filter, will let you know if I can tell the difference as well as mileage. I'll be away until Friday, so after 1200 kilometers or so I should know.

i woudl think dodge wouldmake a pretty nice intake system seeing in how they engineered the truck. but the only thing that coudl seem restrictive woul dbe teh tube. and if a k&n drop in reduces HP than why change teh whole system with one.. in my eyes i woudl change just the tube. to the airraid mit tube or something less restrictive if anything and maybe get the true flow foam filter or something.. i dotn really know though. thats just my .02 i could be completely wrong.

I checked out TrueFlow's online video of their test results. According to them, most of the restriction is cause by the tube and chambers of the stock assembly rather than the airbox itself. Their demonstration video is pretty convincing insofar as how well the filter cleans out dirt and still continues high flow rates.

Anyone tried TrueFlow?
