Default Comments on Oil Filters?

Just wondering if anybody wanted to chime in their opinions on oil filters? I've noticed that there are alot of oil filters out there, with Fram having the most to choose from.
I ask this because, after reading some of the issues on this forum, I'm noticing more and more people complaining about blown engines. So I'm wondering if either the oil, the type of oil, the amount of oil changes/duration of oil changes, or the oil filter is the culprit in these issues..Just wondering, and hoping that some of the things i read about don't happen, if i can prevent it.

If you change your oil every 3000 miles, it doesn't make much difference. If you are using synthetic oil and going with extended oil changes, then a filter such as the Mobil 1 Extended Life filter or the Amsoil 25000 mile filter are ones I would choose.

do a search on filter comparison if your really interested--there have been actual tests done by companies like consumer reports
but in reality I would say just change your oil often (like every 3K) anduse a quality filter that has a silicon anti-drainback valve.
I buy wix filters (oil+air+fuel)in bulk from filter1.com for a reasonable price and use MC semi/syn oil (best price Ive found @wally)

How about a link to the Consumer Reports study, done on Oil Filters.
One other thing, any opinions on using a larger diameter oil filter?

at another dodge forum, there was extensive discussion on this topic. The Wix and Napa Gold (same filter different name) have the greatest efficiency at filtering the smallest particles. Next in line is mobil 1, purolator, and some others. Basically any Fram (except maybe the HP-1 racing filter) should be avoided, as they do not filter well and have cardboard in their construction.

I concur on the Wix, I did a lot of research and they seem to have excellent ratings and don't cost anymore then Fram and less then the OEM filters.

Amzoil has a "bypass" filter system, this basically is an additonal filter that re-filters about a quart at a time down to 1 micron and can extend synnthetic oil lifeup to 25,000 miles.

Fleetguard is a division of Cummins.

The vice president in charge of Fleetguard is a Duke University Mechanical Engineering PhD who claimed in a talk to undergraduate engineering students years ago that their top priority is to make the best fluid filters in the industry at slightly higher first cost.

If you do a search on my name you will see that I have long advocated buying a longer, higher quality, more expensive, oil filter and leaving it on for about 500 hours of operation...usually about 15000-20000 miles of driving....and thru 2-3 changes of the oil.

Dirty oil filters actually filter better than new ones.

It is wasteful of money, and poor practice if you desire the best filtration, to change the filter at every oil change.

The $ are more effectively spent if you buy a better quality oil,
or change oil more frequently...than wastefully changing out a still good filter than is actually approaching its 'prime' period of operation.

I personally usually use the Mobil One long filter, which I think is a model number 301 and spec'ed for the Ford FL1 replacement.
