rumor mill - HEMI's drop valves???
Well, I had a few minutes this morning to see if I could hear anything unusual with my Hemi. Using a stethoscope, I listened to the valvetrain through the intake, cover, and exhaust, and I have to admit that everything sounds perfectly fine. What I heard was every bit as quiet as my Intrepid.
What was extremely noisy was the fuel injectors which you can hear at idle without any aid. My last 2 Dakotas were the same way though and I'd never had a problem with them.
I'm not sure there would be any excessive valve noise associated with a valvespring that is going to break. What kind of noise would metal fatigue/weakness make??
Hemiwolf. I'm not sure that what I'm hearing is the same noise you are hearing. To me, I think everything sounds normal when compared to my other vehicles. I'm sorry this doesn't shed much, if any, light on the problem your having. The only suggestion I can make that may help you, other than the dealer inspection of the noise, is to get an engine stethoscope of your own and see if can locate the noise your hearing. If you can find it, I'm sure the mechanics can help you with it.
I'm sure dodgemech and the other techs on this forum will tell you that chasing a noise is probably one of, if not the most aggrevating thing they do, and certainly the most dissatifying part of their job.
Please keep up with this thread. I'd love to help if I can, if it's even nothing more than being a sounding board for ideas your having.

I got my truck back from the dealership.
They re-flashed the PCM with a very recent update.
I really wasn't sure what this would accomplish for my noisey chattering valve train and my broken valve spring concern.... but this is what they said they did.
I have driven the truck just a few miles so far... and.... the noise is much less noticable, and so is the trucks power.
It drives smoother, but with a noticable decrease in acceleration.
How this is supposed to help the valve spring issue I am not sure.
Now if you asked me what it feels like... I would say it feels like the Cam orientation in relation to TDC changed????
Could they do that in a few hours???
thoughts anyone?

my bosses 04 dropped a valve 6 days after it was picked up from the dealership....starting to wonder if my mopar faith is gonna stay strong.... a woman i work with has a 02 ram and hers keeps shutting off....like driving down the road her engine will die and she has to disconnect reconnect the battery to kick it back on again....so does another of my co-workers does the same thing.

what if out of your own money you replaced thee valves? isnt there a stronger valve out there that can be put into this truck to keep the problem from happening. The only thing that would be a bit*h is if dodge finally recalls on it and fixes the problem with something better and more reliable
No big deal? Maybe for you.
Often times i am literally 50 miles from anyone in the middle of the desert in Arizona on some godforsaken trail. If my truck takes a crap, i'm in a bad way. At the least i have to ride out with a buddy (if i'm not alone) and then figure out how to get my truck out. Not to mention i have to hope the roving idiots don't come accross it and shoot it full of holes, which is quite common.

So I have been worried sick over this valve thing....
I decided to take my truck to the track and really push it...
If it is going to break, at least I would be in control of where and when...
Long story short..
I ran the 1/4 in 16.01
AND
the truck has been running stronger, smoother and quieter ever since.
I'm happy about that, but can anyone come up with a good reason why that might be?
There couldn't have been that much carbon to blow out, you know?
truck only has 18K miles.
thoughts?
