Im not an expert but am surprised a 4by4 with 17"wheels, is this normal? Also what gears? I beleive a 4x4 characteristically gets a little less fuel mile, but 13 is terrible, especially 90% highway. I bet you're turning some high rpm's. I have the 3.55 gears (which i was upset about) 20" wheels and consistantly get 16-17 in town and 2 weeks ago running from Daytona to Tampa @ 80-85 mph, (had to or get run over, i like it anyhow) and got 19.6. Truck always gets better mileage at 80-85 than at 70-75! Oh mine is a 2012 also. Also even with those gears it pulls my 21ft offshore boat quite well. Previously owned 03 and 04 f-150 with 5.4. This Ram easily out pulls both Fords and averages 1-2 mpg better than either fords.

[QUOTE=rawhide007;2944434]I wouldn,t use a 1500 to pull a 7k 5th wheel.Not enough truck in my opinion.,if you do, get at least the 3.92 rear axle.[/

I agree, although with 3.92 it would be maybe better. The biggest dif. Though is taking off from start when owing. You always have the option of running in 5th when towing, or 4th with the 3.55
21 @60? Not surprised, i believe i can get 2-3 better than that highway @ 60 but personally I'd rather hitchike!! LOL see my previous post. All JMO

I figured it would help with break-in and I could see how it would do on a long trip. I had recently dropped in the K&N filter and noticed what seemed to be about a 1 MPG to 1.5 MPG improvement based on the computor, going from about 12.5 to 13.5 in town(3.92s out back). My truck has the 32 gallon gas tank option and I made it to Phoenix on one tank, albeit with the little gas pump alarm on and 30 miles to end of tank on the display. The highest MPG observed via the computor was 17.9 going there. During the course of my visit, my son told me my truck sounded kinda wimpy and I should consider a cat back. He knows a guy that does really good work for a reasonable amount so off we went. I went with a 14" Magnaflow and just replaced the factory muffler and kept the rest. Incidently when we were looking at the monstrous stock muffler the back 1/3 was browned from heat already and you could not see through it. The Magnaflow you can see through and of course the truck now has a nice little rumble...lol Anyway, I really wanted to see what the milage was going to do. I immediatly noticed the computor was hovering between 14 and 15.5 range in town. On my return trip I decided to do a little experiment. There is probably a good 150 miles of rather straight and level hi-way on the trip, so I set the cruise initially at 65 and reset the computer and noted the mileage. After about 10-12 miles it had settled out at 20.5 and stayed there for the 20 miles or so before the next step in my test. I then went up to 70 and reset the computor again and took note. Again after about 10 or so miles it settled out at about 19.3. At about this point there is a stretch of the I-8 that is a 75 zone so I set it there and was surprised to see 18.4! Repeating my method at 80 I got 17.2. When I arrived in San Diego I noticed I was still at a quarter of a tank and the display said 152 miles to end of tank!! Needless to say I am stoked! I have a total of 200 bucks in the exhaust and filter and just turned over 2K miles at the end of the trip. Obviously weather, road conditions, etc. will play a factor, but I am very pleased and just love this freakin truck!!! Oh yeah and the extra power is nice too! I am getting a real kick trying to stay in the MDS mode and see what I can eeck out of this thing. If you haven't done these mods I highly recommend it, they will pay for themselves in the long haul, assuming you can keep your foot out of it! LOL Actually I had a goof ball in a Murano mess with me. Don't know what those have in them, but it had dual tail pipes. Of course after we stabbed the throttle he only saw mine! LOL Peace! ROCKER
Probably had a tailwind on the trip home. The muffler would not make that much difference.

Yup, 17's. Keep in mind this is just an SXT, barely above the base model. I put the window sticker somewhere safe, and of course it's safe from me as well so I'm not sure on gear ratio. I'm pretty sure it didn't have anything extra related on that other than LSD. I hardly ever see it enter eco mode though, I'm hoping as it breaks in a little more it will improve.

Took it to the dealer today and they reset some things and we'll see how it does now. They took it for a short (couple minute) run on the highway and the computer was reading 18mpg. We'll see if that holds up.

It sounds like you're in Canada so I'm guessing your weather pattern has been similar to the one we've got in Western New York State.

From June 1st through August 31st with warmer weather I had 22 fills of fuel with the following hand calculated results:

3 tanks over 21 MPG
3 tanks over 20 MPG
5 tanks over 19 MPG
7 tanks over 18 MPG
3 tanks over 17 MPG
1 tank @ 16.62 MPG

Since January 1st the temperatures have vacillated between the low 40s (3 days) and the low teens, with 4 days in the single digits. With a relatively same driving cycle I've had 7 fills with the following hand calculated results:

1 tank over 17 MPG
5 tanks over 16 MPG
1 tank @ 15.56

Don't forget the effects of temperature and snow covered roads on fuel economy.

Best regards,
Dusty

There must be something wrong with my truck or I need to wait longer until its more broken in (loosen up) even though the manual says no break in period is required. I guess it could be the winter blend they use in Michigan as well?

2013
Ram 1500 Big Horn 4x4
440 miles on truck
Crew Cab
20" Wheels
3.55 gear
I average about 13.8-14.3MPG using 87 octane for my 42 mile round trip to work. only about 15 miles of that is city. Little disappointed in the mileage and i'm light footed.

Thats about right. I get about the same mileage in mixed city/hwy driving.

Other than being 2WD and having 3.92 gears, my Big Horn got into the mid-to upper teens right from the start. Of course that was in May when temperatures were considerably higher than they are now. My first tank over 20MPG was at 8200 miles.

After putting about 13k miles on my 2010 CC hemi 4x4 since july, I average 15 combination and at 55mph with cruise set according to the display I get 23 highway. At 70-75 I get 19.

I have just about 5000 miles on mine now and I've found that the mileage improves every week now and my truck goes into mds alot more now than it ever did currently getting 15 MPG us mostly city driving when I first got my truck the best I could do was 14 but that was in warmer weather without winter blend fuel I suspect this summer I will be much better yet. Although they say they don't need a long break in the fact is they do get better over time so hang in there it will improve.
