Default Just got my first truck. Will these mods help my MPG?

iv been lurking around for a few hours going back about 15 pages just getting info

I just bought a 2011 Ram Sport (pics will come once i detail it)

Im interested in making some MPG gains. I was thinking of a new exhaust (leaning towards flowmaster)

New air intake..maybe a cold air intake? i dont know anything about this stuff

getting a bed cover for Christmas...

im getting 15.5 MPG now with 2300 miles on it.. i drive 2 miles back roads and 20miles interstate.. i was hoping i would get more that 15mpg or maybe its me? im using cruise control most of the time..i do have the 3.92 gear

Lots of good info here so far!

Congrats on the new truck.I get 12.2 so be happy with yours.(id enjoy 15.5) I have exhaust and a CAI. After all, it is a truck.
When you add your new "toys" onto the truck it wont hurt your MPG as long as you keep your foot off the gas. A CAI and exhaust make it hard to do that.

Your going to get better mileage than a 2003 Ram first off. I had an '02 and got 12-13 as well. With the MDS kicking in, I get around 16 in back road driving in NH and 18-19 on the highway at 65mph. CAI will be good, but using the cruise control and discretion with the gas pedal will do more for you than any mod. 89 octane helps a bit too. My next thing will be the headers.
I already did the muffler change.

Oh and welcome to the forum......

Muffler swap and a bed cover will probably be the cheapest as far as mods go. They helped me out.

Yes if your truck came with duals than all you need is a new muffler. I replaced mine with an 18" magnaflow. The stock system is stainless so why replace it? I like the magnaflow due to its straight-through core no power robbing baffles like flowmaster and the magnaflow is stainless so it will last as well as the rest of the factory stuff. I noticed a 0.5 mpg gain after installing my muffler.

Id be happy with 15 mpg on a new truck with 3.92s. Mine has 40k and I get 15 mpg with 3.55s. Your not going to get any significant gains with mods, certainly not cost effective anyways.

Full tube headers should show a minor gain.Possibly a custom tune to go with them.I get 20mpg at 70 mph all the time. These trucks come with a good flowing intake and exhaust to start with.

I have a 2009 Ram, 1500, crew cab, 4X4 with 3.92 axles. I changed my single exhaust to a cat back magna flow 40 and added a AirRaid intake.

Mileage went from 15 city to 16.5 on the average, on highway 70 mph 22, 60 mph 24, on interstate at 80 average is 19 mph.

I actually think all you need to change on the intake is change to a KN filter. changing to the air raid did not make that much of a difference. Have used the standard KN filter on previous models and got about the same results, and KN does not cost $200 bucks.

mileage will get better with more miles, I noticed a significate increase at 15K miles.

On my 07 Dakota HO 4.7 4x4 QC, I didn't get any good results with a K&N drop in, JBA Shorty headers, and went to 2.25 from 2" pipes after the cats, into a flowmaster Y collector, then it went to 3" (instead of 2.5") single pipe to a HOOKER Aerochamber, no resonator. Not sure it helped at all. Not crazy about the JBAs. But the resonating sure got my wife uptight. And after awhile I said the hell with that and put it back on. I'm debating on changing the 32.2" 47 or 48 pound 275/70r17 TRX4 AT tires for some 31.6" 40 pound 265/70r17s at tires, like Firestona Destination ATs. I bet they would do better round town, be like a little more gear cause they're smaller, and easier to turn, and should not hurt highway mileage, but even if I find somebody who actually wants my TRX4 barely used tires (yeah, right!), I will never break even. But I might like it more! I know what I'm gonna buy when it needs it!
