enclosed vs open cold air intake?
On the oil forums above average to high silicate(DIRT) numbers on oil analysis almost always has a K&N drop in filter or K&N cai. Waste of money in my book unless lots of engine mods and you realize that air filtering has been somewhat compromised.
I don't know much about engines but I have put on the Volant closed system along with a gibson dual extreme. I live in Alaska and noticed a few MGP gain in the winter with this setup. I do mostly city driving and this helped a lot. In the summer I pull a camper and noticed a MPG gain as well.
go with what Larry said... stay stock, these trucks have a good air flow as is and throw in a drop in K&N filter or if you don't want to go with the oil filter route go w/ a dry filter,. i believe AMS oil makes a decent dry filter.
Listen Bud, I put a Volant on my Hemi 3 years ago cost me $650. worst money I have ever spent all,s it doe,s is make noise no power gain or mpg gain , listen to those that know save your money, however if your still determined to go the cai route give me a call and i'll give you a sweet deal on a used Volant.
(i wasnt aware that a vararam was available for the 4th gen truck yet)
Vararam kicks butt on looks, BUTTTTTT, i`d have to see "your" dyno sheet.
What tune & trans gear was the truck in when they did the pull... Modded exhaust..? Stock tire size..?
We did a vararam on a 08 hemi truck here, mpg`s went backwards... saw no gain in power with a stock truck.

Don't waste your money.Think about it,if a filter allows more air in,more dirt will enter as well.Looks is the only thing that changes, but if that's what trots your horse,go for it.It's your truck !!!!I have to admit,a CAI looks good, but no benifit, and can actually make performance suffer....
No benefits from the aftermarket CAI systems on the 4th gen hemi trucks unless you do some engine and full exhaust mods. The factory system is superior with the stock engine. Who ever told you it plugs up is full of ****. Unless you have critters makin nests inside the air box or not servicing it when you should, it does not plug up. I have YET, to see any proof these after market CAI`s increase mpg`s either. I`ve tried a couple different cai`s in the recent past, my mpg`s went right in the toilet. Do a search in all the 4th gen dodge truck forums, you`ll see ther are many people that have gone back to the stock air box`s. If you do anything at all, just drop in a K&N filter, thats the best bang for the buck and a hell of alot cheaper too. I got 2+mpg better with the drop in K&N air filter. Best $50 bucks i`ve ever spent on this truck.
When I bought my 2010 I put the K&N from my 2004 into it. I didn't really notice too much of a difference and had the dealership tell me to take it out as they have had several occurences of dust getting in the engines.
Improper care of the K&N filter(s) were the likely cause. I would also like to add, that K&N has a metal screen built in. This screen kept a mouse from getting thru to my engine. Little basterd chewed the hell out of it but did not get thru it. Had that been the factory paper air filter, i`m 100% sure ther would have been a bigger problem to deal with had he gotten thru it and into my engine. I`ll continue to use K&N air filters no matter what a dealer says. I always check my air filters when i check my oil level, (due to mice issues here) if they need service or replacement at that time, i take care of it right then.
