enclosed vs open cold air intake?
im looking to get cold air intake for my 2011 doge ram 1500 sport. i talked to someone and he said i should get open cause enclosed gets plugged up from snow and rain and its winter 6 months of the year here also what cai it cosidered the best?
You do realize that the stock air intake is an enclosed system. The someone you talked to has no clue what they are talking about. Unless you want the added noise from an open intake then your best bet would be to get a good drop-in filter from K&N or AEM or afe.
i was always sold on the open intakes, I have had 3 different F150's on a dyno and attended a few dyno days at Troyer Performance around 2005-2008 where he would dial in your air/fuels and any other tweaks you asked for on his custom mail order tune or tuner/intake combo. With hood open and this huge barrel fan going in front of truck on dyno, the open intakes ( AirForce One and AirRaids in particular) made more power and held peak power longer. Guess this fan setup simulated more realistic driving conditions under the hood. Guys were dumping their stock intakes and Volants when they saw this. However, if you were doing quarter mile sprints or racing from a stop and in hot weather, might get a bit heat soaked with an open design, the open intake would probably pull in hot air and actually hurt performance in this situation. A buddy of mine is trading in his Ram and I am getting his Volant from him before, I will be swapping out my AFE for a bit to check it out since I hate the partial throttle wooshing sound this open intake makes in cold weather on my truck. He did not have this sound at partial throttle but still sounded great at WOT. The open style AFE claims an 18hp increase, the closed style Volant claims a 16 hp increase. And who ever told you it gets plugged up, perhaps they were referring to the optional scoop that you can also get that hangs down or comes out by the fog light. I've only seen the scoop available on the diesels so you would not have that issue and it attaches to the same fender vent that the stock one does.

No benefits from the aftermarket CAI systems on the 4th gen hemi trucks unless you do some engine and full exhaust mods. The factory system is superior with the stock engine. Who ever told you it plugs up is full of ****. Unless you have critters makin nests inside the air box or not servicing it when you should, it does not plug up. I have YET, to see any proof these after market CAI`s increase mpg`s either. I`ve tried a couple different cai`s in the recent past, my mpg`s went right in the toilet. Do a search in all the 4th gen dodge truck forums, you`ll see ther are many people that have gone back to the stock air box`s. If you do anything at all, just drop in a K&N filter, thats the best bang for the buck and a hell of alot cheaper too. I got 2+mpg better with the drop in K&N air filter. Best $50 bucks i`ve ever spent on this truck.

So if i live in a cold/dusty area would it be better to get enclosed? And the one hes trying to sell me is open airaid with a scoop are the scoops and good or would they be bad for like dusty and snow weather?
Save your money and leave it stock. What is the real reason you are looking at changing? As LU said, unless your going to do a bunch to your truck, there is not advantage.
