I am a DIY guy. I do all my own maint. unless it has to be done at the dealer because of warranty issues. I have not had to do anything to my 09 yet, but I will tell you that it will not be as easy as the previous generation. I have noticed that the power steering pump has no dipstick to check its level. The coolant recovery tank is black so you can not see your water level. There is some weird stuff on this truck. I have no idea what the engineers were thinking or what else we will find during the next few months. I still can't get over the recovery tank, just plain nuts.

 

theres no p/s dipstick cause the reservoirs are now "clear-ish" and you can see the level through the outside. also has the min/max or cold/hot lines embossed in. the coolant recovery is no different than the old dakota/durangos. although i dont remember if they have dipsticks, pretty sure they do.

 

I will look at the PS reservoir again. I did notice that it was kinda white, but I did not notice any markings like the brake reservoir. I hope it does, now what about that coolant tank? I guess they wanted it black because it sits right in the front of the grille opening.

 

i made sure to pay attention the other day when i had an 09 in. there is a coolant dipstick for the reservoir. cant really remember about markings on the p/s. the p/s work ive done with the new style reservoir, ive filled to the seam about 2/3 they way up--no noise or air bubbles, or low fluid complaints.

You are right, the ps tank does have markings. The are much harder to read than the one for the master cylinder.

The dipstick for the coolant is a poor design. It has no markings, just some holes. Of course, the water is too thin to stick to the stick or holes, so I guess just look in the tank and see if there is any water when it is cold and you will be fine. It would have been nice if a scale with a clear window was on the back side (eng side) so that you could see the coolant level. It would have made the tank cost a few pennys more, but would have been worth it.

 

Warning! Before you drain the oil on your first oil change, the nuts at Mopar have changed to a larger thread on the filter. Mopar has always used the 05281090 (m0-090) on everything, not on the 5.7 2009. So you can get rid of your Purolator L14670 and your Fram ph16s.

I had to borrow my dad's truck and go get the correct filter. You can use several different filters, here a few:

and after you have changed your oil filter to clear the "oil needs changed" reminder:

turn the key all the way to the on position (do not turn it all the way to crank the motor over)
turn the key back to off postion
turn the key back to the on position.
hammer down on the gas pedal 3 times
turn the key to the off position

when you start up the truck the reminder will be cleared.

 

It's not necessary to turn the key on, then off, then on again. Just turn it to the on position, fully depress the gas pedal 3 times within 10 seconds and then turn the key off.
