I hear 'ya man. I've go the standard 6 speaker and for stock it sounds GREAT. I've always added some bass one way or another to fill the sound out but the stock system on this truck is really pretty good.

Luckily for my wallet, I don't have much of a musical ear. I never could tune a guitar just by listening to it, regardless of how long I played. Not being an audiophile has saved me some cash over the years. But I could tell the difference between the stock and upgraded systems, but I think that's more or less where it ends.

I will be keeping the factory head unit with navigation but will be replacing everything else.

Component speakers will be going in the doors and subs under the rear seat. I will not be using the dash or the "sound bar" in the rear ceiling for any speaker locations.

I look forward to getting the work done, I just am waiting for a convenient time to give my truck up for a week.

It will take a week because they are building a custom fiberglasss enclouser for the subs under the rear seat, amp racks and installing Dynamat in the doors.
Are you going with Alpine subs? Would it be easiest to upgrade the sub then if I went with an Alpine amp and sub?

Everything will be JL Audio. I used Boston Pro's in the past but my dealer does not sell them anymore and I have always used JL amps/subs.

I just spoke with someone at Crutchfield and found out some interesting and somewhat disapointing info.

First, there is very little room in the doors for speaker upgrades. The max mounting depth in the front is 2.9", most 6x9's and 6.5's (full range) are 3.25 - 3.5 The roof mounted speakers are actually 2.5", not 3.5, so there is no upgrade available. Also like many new cars the premium (and base) stereo has amps that are for 2 ohm speakers, so our 506watt system is only about 200watts (not including the sub) if you upgrade to a standard 4 ohm speaker.

I am still trying to find a wiring diagram to see exactly how the speakers are connected to the amp to determine my exact upgrade route. I would rather not change the amp or head unit and would prefer not to pull any new wiring. I am hoping the L/R dash speakers are wired with a cross-over to the door 6x9's. If thats the case then I can find 2 ohm 6.5" components to fit into the door and place the tweeter in the dash where the 3.5" used to be. Then get some 2 ohm 6x9's for filler in the rear. Not sure what to do about the 2.5's in the roof, if they are like the fronts and run off a cross-over from the rear doors then they can be replaced with tweeters as well.

Good info! The JL Audio C5-650 components I'm putting in have a mounting depth of 2.54"

Anyone know if they came out with a hayne's manual or something for this truck. I don't really want to be tearing apart a panel breaking it only to realize that there was another screw hidden away.

Found some more information. The amp that is included with the premium stereo is an 8 channel 368watt amp (just like the Kicker upgrade but different equalizer and DSS).

The channels are for each of the dash speakers (3), front and rear doors (4) and a low powered output that goes to the amp that is powering the sub.

This helps with what to do with the small speakers in the roof because they must be driven off the rear door speakers so upgrading to a 6x9 or 6.5 component set should be the way to go and mount the tweeter in the roof. It complicates the front a bit though, because how are the door speakers crossed over? Do they get full range sound and have a bargain (capacitor) crossover at the speaker or is the amp taking care of the cross over?

Has anyone else noticed that only lows and mids come from the 6x9's in the front doors? I haven't put my ear to the speaker to see if any higher frequencies are coming from them but sitting in the seat it doesn't seem so.

I guess as this point I have to open things up and take a look. Unless someone has done it already? Or has a stereo place they can ask? I've checked with a few places around here and most don't even have the fitment info for our trucks let alone wiring diagrams or amp datasheets.

Also, I wonder if it would be worth upgrading to the Kicker Amp since its plug and play and more setup for the dynamics of aftermarket speakers???

My install is being done with a JL Audio Clean Sweep and a JL Audio Signal Summing Device.

This will create a flat signal to be fed to the after market amps.

I would love to get away from the factory amp but I would rather not cut\splice\pull or fab anything on the truck, yet! Just want to get rid of the flat midrange and weak highs. Hopefully Kicker will get back to me today. If the replacement amp fits the bill I'll get it and some Infinity Kappa's and hopefully the crossovers in the amp won't hinder the performance of the Infinity speakers.

Dober, when is your install going to be done?
