I've been to the dealer twice for this issue. The first time they couldn't recreate the problem, the second time they still couldn't recreate the problem again, so I took the driveline tech for a ride in the parking lot next door. We did hundreds of start-stops and it made the noise plenty of times. He got in and drove it and it made the noise for him too. We came back to the dealership and took out a truck the had been repo'd that was equipped similar to mine - just no leather. It didn't make the noise. We went back to the dealership and he told me he'd call Chrysler and see what they say.

I called back 2 weeks later to see if my seat cover was in and I asked what Chrysler said about my rear end noise (no jokes). They said that Chrysler said that there was no problem. When I asked them to put in writing they refused. They told me that they put in the repair order that they could find no problem. I told them that their tech went with me and we found a problem, he was going to call Chrysler and find out what they say. They didn't seem to remember any of that.

I was told that the seat cover would be in in a couple of days and they'd have an answer on the rear end by then. The paperwork was done when I picked up the truck and was told that they'd write it up when I came back in. Now the tech is saying that he emailed Chrysler and hasn't gotten a response from them - It's a good thing my truck is not sitting there waiting for an answer.

Long story short - I don't think there is an answer, everything under the bed is tight and snug. I think that there is something in the rear axle making that noise, but it's not constant - I just can't figure out the conditions other than when I quickly take off from a stop.

Anyone else?

I'm with you Thatmarkguy, I've been experiencing the same issue. Seems to come and go every few days. When it's happening I can feel it on every stop, fast or slow. A gentle thump that feels like it's coming from the rear axle 2-3 seconds after coming to a complete stop. It disappears after a few days and then returns in a few more.

The first time I took it into the dealer they couldn't recreate the issue, so I waited until the truck was doing it again and took it straight back. Again, can't recreate, I called BS and asked the service writer to take a ride with me. He did, and once I pointed out the "thump" he felt it just fine. He then went on explain that it was just normal clerances cut into the gears for thermal expansion. I called BS again and let him know that this is my 5th Dodge pickup and I've never experienced anything even close to what's happening now. Also, with this issue coming and going every few days, I let him know I didn't buy his story and that if it continued to be an issue I would be back again.

So that's where I am with it now. I've always assumed it was an issue with the Hill Start Assist kicking in when it shouldn't. I have the 3.92's and Limited Slip and have wondered if they had anything to do with it as well. Anyway, please keep us posted on what you discover.

It would be really easy to prove if it's really a gear clearance issue.

Park the truck on level ground and chock the wheels.
Put it in neutral
Grab the rear driveshaft and twist back and forth, see if you get excessive play or a clunk. Also pay attention to the pinion and pinion yoke, see if either appears to move in and out when you twist the driveshaft. (That would be either improper pinion setup or a loose pinion nut)

It might not be in the rear end after all - RedRam has a 3.92 with a limited slip, I've got a 3.55 with no LSD. But I'm glad someone else has this issue so it shows it's not just an anomaly on my truck.

What do the Service advisors know? Do they actually do any repairs or do they just type in your info and forward your vehicle to the most likely to be able to fix it technician. Taking a Service Advisor is a waste of time he has no influence, the technician, the one who actually is hands on is the one who should go with you but rarely do they let that happen. I think they are afraid we might learn something. I think I am going to order the service manual on this truck, I ordered theone for my Durango was surprised since I was an employee it was like 70 bucks shipped. Something cheaper maybe I remember it was way cheaper than the price it was shown as. It's nice to go in and know what you are talking about.
