Bored Experiments on my way to and from school...
I agree driving that fast is just foolish....... I'm a city slicker down in MIA, and our roads are way to congested to even go the speed limit most of the time....... but I can't lie, get me drunk on the way home from the club at 5AM, the streets are empty and I can't help but opening her UP....... ST8 STUPID...!!!!!! I hate and love it....
That's the purpose of forums!
Speeding is just one of the many things people do that cause accidents, so it's hard for me to focus so much on it where things like running a stop sign or street light I would say is a lot worse. Honestly though it's all situational, think about all the illegal things people do all over the place and don't get caught and no one gets hurt. Those numbers are not available for statistics, we only have the numbers for people that do get hurt and the accidents that are reported. (And we all know statistics are skewed anyways, much love for statistic manipulation)
I respect the fact you disagree with speeding due to you being a Police Officer and losing something close to you due to speeding, but it goes along the same lines as someone not liking war because they lost a loved one or hating guns because someone near and dear was shot.
I'm just being the devil's advocate and sparking a debate or trouble, whichever comes first.

No disrespect to Milkman or his family -
I think that doing 55 on the interstate (posted 70) is just as dangerous to the public as doing 100.... I could add a whole list of other things that don't involve speed which are just as bad and happen every day... Usually by little old ladies, timid men, distracted teens, the list never ends.
I'd say that - for the most part - the person who is comfortable enough with their vehicle to drive fast, corner hard, etc is LESS of a risk to the public than the middle aged man who is scared to death to be on the road.
Milkman says 'what happens when a deer runs out in front of you' Well, if possible you take evasive action. If you've pushed your vehicle to it's limits before and are familiar with it, you know it's capabilities and are able to avoid it, other traffic, etc. If you've never snatched the wheel around good and hard and aren't comfortable with it, you freak out and cover your eyes. You hit the deer, slam into oncoming traffic, skid into the opposite ditch and smash some old ladies collection of 50 garden gnomes.
I was once towing a pretty heavy load, approaching a steep hill so I began to pick up a bit of speed to help make it up the hill. Think about 55 in a 40 or so... The 'fraidy cat' ahead of me (who would have been well out of the way) sees me coming in a "big truck" and starts slowing down... why? No idea.... Time I get close to him he is doing 30 staring in the rearview mirror...
He was more of a danger to the public than any competent drive doing 150 on a desolate highway.
just my 2 cents...

I just have to jump in here. I have had my truck up to the speed limiter a few times. I have also tested the cornering ability as far as I feel comfortable to push it without spinning or rolling. Of course all of this has been done on a world class road racing track (Miller Motorsports Park 3500' straight 22 turns) where I work weekends as a flagger. I drive 42,000 miles a year on highways at an average of 5 over and (knock wood) never had a ticket. There is a proper place for high speed and it isn't the public streets.
I love the comment about 5 over being the same as 100 over...I have never laughed so hard at such a dumb comment in my entire life....
Listen.. I don't mean to offend anyone... but here is why I am critical...
First off. I have had family killed by driver who was testing his new car....
LIVE THROUGH THAT.
Secondly, I am a police officer patrolling our PUBLIC roads. Being on and using something PUBLIC means you should have respect for the other users/motorists. By traveling at such a high speed you not only put yourself at risk but it is a wanton and reckless disregard for the public's safety.
What happens when you are going that fast and a deer decides to cross... what happens when you are going that fast and you have a blow out.. wht happens when you are going that fast and for some reason there is a pedestrian or someones child around...
There are a lot of "what ifs" that should be thought about before going that fast on a PUBLIC road.
It is quite obvious that THOUGHT has not been put into this.
Some of you may may hate my comments, some of you may hate ME. But live what I live and see what I have seen and you would understand.
Traveling this fast on a public road is dumb, irresponsible, idiotic, inconsiderate, selfish, dangerous and illegal.
Everyone travels over the speed limit at some point or even daily. But to intentionally travel at race track speeds on a highway is not the same as 70 in a 65...
I have said my peace..
Good day...

My post was not limited to the reasons I listed... I could have made a list a mile long about some of the things that people do behind the wheel which are just as dangerous...
Sure there are old people that cant change they are old... people have bad habits that cant be broken..
And the deer comment, I was merely stating that and I should have made it clear, take evasive action instinctively at 100 MPH + when a deer jumps out and you had better hope no one is around to pay for your mistakes....
You have a much better chance of successful incident if are not being stupid... Murphys Law always applies...just as you think everything is good..something DUMB will happen..
Everybody that has been driving for any length of time knows of the dangers out on the roads...
Why consciously add to the problem by "seeing what it can do"...my family member would still be here if that person was not "seeing what it can do"...
I see so many accidents that people admit to going to fast and they said "I went that fast before around that bend and never had a problem". I have been involved in investigations which involved traffic accident fatalities from the driver being stupid.
Example and true story: Husband and wife in their 40's, attractive couple and well-to-do, bought a 2003 or 2002 'Vette brand new (I cant remember the year but they bought it the day before) and were on a rural Pa road in my zone. The husband was driving on the rural state highway, 2 lane 55 MPH road. I received a call for "one vehicle roll over with possible ejection" on this highway. I was only minutes from the scene upon receipt of the call. Upon my arrival the husband was out of the vehicle rendering aid to his wife. Both of whom who had been wearing their seatbelts. The call came out correcty as ejection. The man had hit a tree so hard it ripped her out of her seat belt. I have gone on long enough with the long version...any way.. the man admitted he was traveling approx 110 MPH when he had no idea what happened except the car fishtailed and he lost control.
That man held his wife of 18 years when she died on that evening in the middle of the road waiting for the ambulance. I also had to place him under arrest for killing his wife, negligently.
All I am saying is, If I can save one life by wasting all of this bandwidth, it was worth it....

Well as far as I am concerned I hope that none of you is a cop in my juristiction. The one guy does it in the dark drunk.......gee I hope no kids out waiting for the bus early in the morning like that. If they are they should see and hear him coming and be smart enough to step back. I don't care who drives and how they do, we might as well drive live morons since the insurance companies bill us ALL like we do and not just the idiots that deserve to pay.
