Almost a year ago, I was looking at a new truck. It was between the Ram and the F150. I'm pretty sure I'm leaning towards Ram. I was looking at Dodge's website and noticed they have redone the 2010 2500 truck. The truck I'm looking to get is either a 1500 or 2500 crew cab Laramie. What turned me on to the Ram last year was the updated interior and I'm glad they brought that to the 2500. I was messing around on Dodge's website, and with the same options, I can get a 2500 for the same MSRP as a 1500. My question is, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the two? In terms of towing, my boat and trailer weighs about 5000 lbs max. I'm sure the 1500 would handle it fine. I currently have a 2005 Silverado HD with a diesel. I was looking at getting the diesel but not sure it's worth the extra 7k. I don't do any serious hauling. Basically odd trips to Lowes and carrying around supplies when I tow the boat. That was another reason why I liked the 1500. The Rambox seems to be a feature I would use instead of throwing my gear in the bed and letting it slide around. I'm assuming the 2500 loses the smooth ride of the 1500 due to the lack of the rear coil suspension. Is it that big of a downgrade?

Sound like you have already pick the 1500 you are just looking for some one to give you a little push to go for it.

2500 should also get worse milage due to it's increased weight, and I don't know if they incorporate the fuel saver mode into the 2500/3500 hemi's. If you are sure you'll never need to tow more than 5K, then I'd go with the 1500.

Well your usage habits sound a lot like mine. Heavy cargo loads only a few times a year, most towing is pretty light. But lately I have been looking for a recreational trailer, and the fact that mine is a half ton has pretty much ruled out about 85% of fifth wheels which generally are a lot more spacious feeling than travel trailers. In hindsight, I wish I had a 3/4 ton, but they weren't selling 4th gen 2500's last year and I didn't like the 3rd gens.

Even though to a lot of people it would seem impracticle, I think that even if I only maintained my light usage habits, if I were faced with a decision between the two, and the price was prety much the same, I think I would go for the 2500. Idk why for sure. Some macho thing inside of me I guess. I like the bigger tougher look and stance, I like that you can get it with a factory hidden winch, I like the fact that it can tow a whole lot if I wanted to. Just more of a cool man factor to me. But I do really really like the truck I have too, so I don't think you can go wrong with either.

BTW, It seems unusual that they would be the same price with the same options and equipment. From what I've seen, Usually the 2500's are several thousand dollars more. Nicely equipped 2500's seem to be going in the high 40's with stickers in the 50's which is quite a bit more than the 1500's.

I also was torn b/w the Ram and the F-150 but when I got into the 09 Ram, it was over I fell in love with it. Bought a Laramie and have never thought twice about another truck.

I also like the 2500, and it was nice to see that they did an update to them.

ride quality is worse in 2500 (lots worse if you are not loaded)
gas mileage is far worse in 2500 loaded or unloaded (if no ctd)
2500 is better if you are planning on doing serious mods for off roading

you do not need a diesel or 3/4 ton truck for anything that you do!! lol.

take full advantage of the "car like" ride of the new 1500 1/2 ton trucks such as the dodge. or even the ford....

for me it came down to pricing... i got DOUBLE the amount off of my dodge compared to what ford would get... (14k vs. 7k at the time.) i dont care who makes it, you can fix a lot of stuff for 7k differance over the years...lol

Yea, between the Ford, Chevy and Dodge, I saw the same thing.Dodge was willing to deal on both my trade in and the actual truck. The Dodge drives better than the other two, I picked Dodge. If I planned on towing something more than 6,000 pounds, I would've got something else.

+1 for the 1500. As stated, it'll handle all your needs just fine, and give you a much smoother ride when you're not towing anything and whatnot. Plus...bleh for ford. My 2nd choice of 1500 class would be the new Silverados, or possibly the new Tundras before I'd look at an F-150. Never liked the way they drove, felt inside, looked, just...bleh. Just my $0.02.
