Default Power Step Problems

First of all, let me say that I love the looks of the AMP Research Power Steps and the functionality is great, but... mine have not worked right since I installed them. The biggest problem is that the driver's side board does not retract all the way up under the body. I called the tech support at AMP Research and they are really helpful but their reply has been that when they were designing the step, they didn't have a real "test mule" truck. Also, the hardware that came with the kit was not adequate enough to hold the weight of the board. They said that they are going to send me some newer hardware along with some new instructions for a different setup. I will let you all know what happens... I am still waiting.

Make sure that if you buy them you are getting the latest version.

The only thing that comes to mind on your retraction issue is that maybe you don't have the hinges squared properly to the boards. That could cause binding resulting in a board that would not fully retract.

As for the hardware, please let us know what is different. I can't see what they could really change though as the body bolts are as large as they can be and still use the Rivnuts and the top bolt mounting insert can't be any larger or it would not fit though the oval hole.

I got mine last July and have had no issues with the retraction or hardware. My instructions were IM3676 rev 06.12.09, the same exact instructions available today. That was for a Quad Cab truck. You can download the instructions from their website to see if they are the same as what you currently have.

Default I'm interested also.

Bought mine from Amp last March. Truck arrived early May. Dealer installed my steps for me. Everything was fine until a couple of months ago when the temps started to drop. I noticed the passenger side started to not always fully retract. I'll be interested to learn how this works out. Thanks.

I have had mine about 2 months now. From the get go it seems the idler end does not retract as tight to the body as the motor end. It really isn't that noticeable but if there is a fix, I want to do it. Subscribing to this thread. Let us know what you found out.

I agree that for the price of these steps, they had better work perfectly, every time. At first, my wife didn't mind the price because they worked fine, but now, every time she gets a chance, she gets a shot in saying that I either need to get them fixed or get rid of them. I HATE THAT! Plus, it looks like I have something hanging off of my brand new truck.

Believe me, as soon as I get a fix or an update, I will let you all know. I have been talking to a guy named Andrew over at AMP Research. He seems like a good enough guy and willing to make things right. I just wish that they had done a bit more "research" in building these things prior to releasing them... especially at this price.

Wow, yours must be more noticeable than mine. I have to be at the right angle and looking for it, to notice the idler end hanging down maybe 3/4" at worst than the motor end. However, I would still like them even for the price I paid. At first I thought it was my installation, but I went back and loosened and adjusted them to make sure they were right and the front still hangs. Thanks for keeping us posted as to what Amp says.

I'll see if I can post a pick of how low it hangs down... probably a good two to three inches. Really noticeable.

Hmm.. I installed mine last March and have been completely satisfied. They are on a Laramie crew cab. If only their bed step worked with the dual exhaust.

Wow, 2-3" is a lot. Mine are still perfectly flush with the rocker panel. And that is after using them through the salt, sand, slush, and snow.

Do you guys that are having issues own a Crew Cab? Mine is a Quad. Really not much different though, maybe a few inches longer for the Crew steps I would guess.
