Default Gear swap and speedo adjustment?

Ok, so I'm Herr t the shop getting my 4.10 gears in. The sales guys wait till the rer end is apart and then tell me that then new gears will make the speedo horribly off since I'm going from 3.55 to 4.10s. They're say that it say I'm doing 70 when I'm only doing 60. Of course they havethe solution they say a Superchip programer will fix it and only cost me $500. Obviously I'm a little skeptical, especially since Superchips just released thier program for the 2009s and the programmer they're will to sell me has inch of dust on it it's been sitting on the shelf so long.

Speedometer is driven from the ABS (wheel speed) sensors... unplug one and your speedometer won't work. Change your tire size and your speedo will be off. Change your gears and your speedo will read correctly. It used to be the speedometer was driven by the output speed of the transfer case (or transmission in 2wd trucks), but 09 is different.

If you doubt me, you can always double check with a GPS navigation thing. I run 35's my speed is off by 5mph at 65... so I'm actually doing 70. I'm thinking about getting 4.10's, and my speedometer will still be off the same amount... only difference is where the tach sits.

i sure wouldnt want to buy the dusty one off their shelf, especially for $500! you can order one for anywhere between $350 and $400 depending on where you look. and the ones coming out of there now should already be configured with the 09 stuff already according to the SilsHemi guy off of the Superchips thread on here. I would just tell the guys installing it to not worry about it, that you will get one elsewhere and shop around for the best price. wont take you long at all to find one under $500!

Cool, thanks for the info. I really just got the feeling that they were try to make another sell off of me, as if I'm not spending enough with them today. I do want a Superchips programmer, but just not enough cash in my truck mods account for that right now, and the wife would kill me if I dipped into savings for it. Thanks again, I'll walk back over there and tell them to stick it!

While speedo may be correct the shift points should be rpm and mph based so I assume the transmission controller needs to know the correct ratio or your shift points may be off. Never been into a Dodge pcm so but thats how it works on GM cars.

The shift points won't be effected b/c both the speedo and tach still read correctly and the truck shifts based on how quickly you accelerate and the rpm of the engine. Plenty of guys w/ 3rd gens w/ the same tranny have done gear swaps and had no issues w/ shift points, speedo, tach, etc. I wonder why superchips lists the gear change thing as a feature on their programmers for the rams b/c it has no use.
