Default Low Idle Issue

So I come to a stop and the idle drops to 450-500 like the truck is going to stall out. I asked about this on another forum and others are having the same problem. One guy said they finally replaced his torque converter which fixed the issue.

I have been messing with this since I purchased my truck 3 weeks ago to gather information. Once the truck is at operating temp when I come to a stop the idle drops to 450 or 500 and it sounds like the engine is about to stall. Doesn't matter how fast or slow or how far I move. Pulling up a few feet in a drive through is enough to trigger it.

Fix #1 - turn the steering wheel slightly, just enough to put a little load on the engine and let go, and presto the idle jumps back up to about 600 where its happy and smooth.

Fix #2 - turn on the AC, doesn't exhibit this issue with the AC on.

ESP off has no effect

Trailer/tow on (this takes ECO mode out of the equation) has no effect.

This is very distracting, you can feel the truck nearing stall so naturally you look down. Pretty soon you are looking down in anticipation. Anything that takes your eyes off the road is a safety issue in my opinion for me and other drivers so she is going into the service dept to get this fixed.

Mine is doing the same thing. I dropped mine up to neutral and back to drive and that stopped it. Leads me to beleive they got a bunch of bad torque converters.

Had this problem on my Dakota with the same tranny. Consulted with several Tranny shops and Dodge Service techs.

Could be:

Torque converter clutch solenoid pack

-or-

Improper install of internal tranny filter (This partially solved my problem. and after about 5000 miles it quit stalling)

-or-

Air bubble in the Tranny cooler line

-or-

PCM Flash

etc.

You hit the nail on the head, as I have said before my same problem went away with the install of a new torque converter.

My truck does the same thing at a complete stop. Noticed it after 5,000 miles.
Hopefully not a bad torque converter.

I've only got 1200 miles on mine and I've occasionally noticed this very same thing. It only lasts for a couple of seconds but is quite noticeable. It happens to me only 1 out of 6 or 7 stops though, and sometimes not at all.

so not that I doubt that a bad bunch of torque converters got out, but I was told that it is lowering the idle at a complete stop to help save fuel...call me crazy but there seem to be too many people with the exact same problem for it to be a bad component. You would have thought they would have caught it by now and put out a recall if that was the case.

Yet at least one guy got a new torque converter and the problem went away. If the idle was designed to lower itself to improve mileage it would still be doing this on his truck. I think you got told a line of BS.

Other points that suggest its a designed in feature are,

1. Turning the steering wheel or shifting into and back out of neutral fixes the idle.

2. This didn't start on some vehicles until 5,000 miles and 8,000 miles. If it was designed in it would be doing this from day one.
