I don't see the purpose of trading in and inheriting another car payment. Either way it goes, you will still pay the same price for the gas whether or not you have the truck or not. This rise in gas prices will not stay like this forever. Just keep your truck and ride out the prices. Just stay light footed on the gas pedal.

I have to disagree here... I think people will be riding for a looooong time if you think its going to drop dramatically.. IMOOriginally Posted by lil_jo_25

I use 4 gallons a day. An increase of 40 cents per gal. Is 1.60 a day. Not that big a deal. I also wonder, if you didnt need a truck, why get one? If I had to cross a 30 foot stream id get a canoe. Not a 20 foot cigarette boat with twin v8s. Extreme analogy but if you don't tow a boat/camper/trailer or load it with work stuff . If everything you do in that truck could be done in a prius, I don't get the point. I'm not judging like a hippy. I just don't get it.

No offense to anyone, but I just get really sick of people telling me what I'm supposed to do with my vehicles.
I remember during the last gas-price-freak-out in '08, my wife was in the market for a new (to us) SUV, and we wanted a Durango. We went to a place in Tacoma, because they had a nice used '06 for sale. The problem - the a-hole salesman kept going ON AND ON about how the gas mileage sucks, and wanted to make sure I understood how much more money I would be spending in gas, and that I REALLY need to buy one of his new Hyundai POS-SUV's instead. I just said "buddy, never mind" and left.
We ended up getting a Chev Equinox and my wife loves it.
The moral of my story - If someone wants a truck, and understands that he will be spending more on gas than if he had bought a car, and the truck is STILL worth it to that person, then ignore what the doomsday-fortune tellers, and the idiot salesmen, and the liberal media try to tell you - just GET THE DAMN TRUCK!!!

Record Breaker
There are many reasons to get a "gas sipper". We the wife and I drove our truck about 20,000 miles a year so after 5-6 years, the truck is up on the miles and I start looking to replace it. 6 years ago (2005) my father in law bought a new car and he had a 1995 Camry 4 cylinder with about 95,000 miles that he wanted to get rid of because the dealer would give him nothing for it. I took the car and used it for commuting to work instead of the truck. The Camry averaged about 25 MPG combined and my truck about 14 MPG. After the first year, I noticed that we had put about 12,00 miles on the Camry- these are miles that did not go on the truck! that was good as it made the truck last a few years longer. The insurance on the Camry was about $300 a year and the money I saved on gas was considerable.
12,000 miles divided by 14 MPG (truck) would have used up 857 gallons, instead at 25 MPG (Camry) I used up 480 gallons, at $4 a gallon, thats $1500 a year. If I subtract the $300 for extra car insurance, I'm still ahead $1200. Another benefit was that I was going through tires every other year on the truck. With the Camry, the tires lasted 60,000 miles so the truck tires lasted longer as well. It worked for me but I know that is not for everyone. I got to keep my truck longer and saved money as my savings payed for the Camry in about 2 years. The Camry is still running but my niece is driving it now. I don't have a gas sipper today and since I am retired, I don't need the "commuter car".

Nope, I had an 06 SLT Quad cab, and then in 2007 I panicked and traded it in for an Acura. Then Gas prices went down. I missed my truck and then bought my 2010 Laramie. Glad I got my dodge truck again.. Wait it out.Originally Posted by Bighornz

Gas prices are up because of the unrest in the middle east. It made it jump roughly 75 cents in 3 weeks. If and when there is peace there, gas prices should settle back down again to around what they were, which is ~3.35 or so where I live.
To the person that said gas prices are never going down, only up. Explain to me why at one point gas was at $4.50 a gallon and settled down to the low to mid $3 range for a year or two?

Sorry, but you dont have my sympathy from me. You have the cheapest gas prices in the country! Our gas is at $1.28/L for the cheap stuff, and yes we have a refinery here too.Originally Posted by stump3r
What really pisses me off is that the stuff sitting in my gas tank came out of my backyard and was refined but a half hour drive away from my house and I'm paying over a buck a liter (about $4.18/USGallon)for it. Something so wrong about that!
