I’ve got a 2011 Ram 1500 that was built in March 11 and supposedly has the Differential problem resolved in it (recall on diffs for 2011 made prior to Dec 18, 2010). If you read the owners manual on the disc you get it says that the rear diff fluid height should be 5/8” below the fill hole. This is absolutely wrong. So when I took out the fill plug I found the rear diff overfilled by over ½ qt. The rear diff cover does NOT have a rubber fill plug in it. This is Chryslers new fix for the earlier diffs failing. Overfill the new ones and send it out to the customer.

I called Chrysler factory and filed a complaint that I cannot check the fluid height properly because the diffs are over filled and there’s no way of checking them. They told me don’t worry about it you have a 5yr/100k warranty and would do nothing for me. The idiot I talked to said I should set the fluid height to what the owners manual said and if it failed Chrysler would replace it. I told this guy he was an idiot to make that statement and I’d be damaging my diff. I can’t get Chrysler to install the rear diff cover w/ rubber plug from the recall fix under warranty.

Anyone out there check the rear diff fluid level on their 2011 Ram 1500 that was built after 1-1-2011? Do they have a rear diff cover with a rubber plug in it?

 

I know this is not helping you, but wanted to share my story...
I had problems with my 2009 Ram 1500 rear differential from day 2 - Made the mistake to have the dealer "fix" it for me and the avalanche of problems started from that point...Needless to say I sold the truck after the 6th trip to the dealership and when the "master" tech told me there is no oil underneath my truck. When I had him lift up the truck again in front of me, there was nothing but oil spread all over the place from the differential.

I feel your pain - especially when having to listen to idiots like the one you talked to on the phone.

This only applies to 2010 and 2011 trucks not 09's correct?

 

This ONLY applies to 2011 rear diffs for the Ram 1500

 

If you search around on here you will see that the recall for those rears specified that the dealer should overfill the diff since the fill plug had been placed too low.

If it really bothers you then buy a new cover and plug for a 2009/2010 or talk the dealer into giving you one.

DISCUSSION:

This Service Bulletin is being released as a preventative countermeasure to address an

axle durability condition.

 

Put a new Mag Hytec cover on it and be done ( I did ).

 

x2... they have a dip stick to check the fluid and a drain plug for easy diff fluid changes.

 

...and they hold around 5 quarts of diff oil ! They also look awesome.

 

The 2009 / 2010 diff cover plugs are set to the same height as the 2011 threaded fill plug.
