5.7 Hemi engine pukes Part 3
OP - i dont think you ever answered what dealership in jersey it was? is it a dodge dealer?
i had a caliper hang up and my truck got towed to freehold chrysler jeep (not freehold dodge/suburu) and they called me saying it was not to be covered under warranty because i had used junkyard parts on my truck and some long story ... meanwhile my truck had 30k on it and nothing had ever been touched.
i had freehold dodge/suburo go pick up truck and everything was fixed no questions asked, their only comment (besides rolling eyes) was that the other dealer sometimes does questionable things.
so i wonder if its a dealer or corporate whos really being the problem all along.

First, threatening to sue, trading the truck off for another make, mean mouthing and boycotting is not a good place to start. Once you tell them you'll never buy another vehicle from Chrysler you’re communicating that they've already lost you and it removes any incentive to try to make you happy. Right now your dealer is your best advocate and they have some level of influence over the situation. Working with them in a positive manner will generally get you farther than immediately turning pit bull on them.

I have been nice to the service manager as well, when I last spoke with him he said he was willing to sell me the remote start I asked about at cost and install it for free for being so patient.
You are also correct regarding an engine replacement, that's not something they do often and odds are a given tech has never done one.
My real concern now is gaskets, that truck didn't leak a drop and I'll be watching it close for oil leaks when I get it back.
If they are definitely not going to replace the engine, I'd have one additional request for them. Since they going to flush the engine to remove the debris. Then I would also request they change out the oil pump as well.. This comes from the fact the oil goes throught the pump before it gets to the filter. Hopefully the filter managed to filter out any metal debris before it gets to the rest of the engine, but with it being after the oil pump, the pump itself could have been damaged..

I'd be just as concerned that they have never done a cam replacement, especially with the engine still in the vehicle.
Thats going to be a bitch with the engine still in the truck, I wouldn't want to do it. In fact that whole job has to be a back breaker, probably easier to just yank the engine out of there and put it on a stand.
I asked the techs at my Dodge dealer if they have ever had to replace an entire 5.7 in a Ram and they said "no." Not bad for an engine that's going on ten years old. They did replace one in a Jeep that had been driven without any coolant.
However...and although I didn't think to ask yesterday...I would bet a Dodge dealer's service department has technicians that have removed and replaced 2.7 motors in cars.

Earlier on this thread it was mentioned by the OP that the dealer said that the roller bearing on the lifter froze. If that was the case, then the damage can be due to the lack of Zinc in the oil. Newer engines with roller bearings don't need the Zinc, but older engines with the regular solid (hydraulic) lifters have to have Zinc added. If the bearing froze, then it was acting like the regular ones. Maybe a combination of frozen bearing and a bad part? Just throwing this out for those unfamiliar with the oil requirements.
Personally, i think it was just a faulty lifter right from the get go, and it took time before it finally let go.
I sure hope they install a brand new oil pump if they rebuild his engine..!!!!
Have a friend of mine that had the oil pump let go on his hemi truck, warranty didnt cover it, had to buy his own engine.
Thats what he gets for letting BIFFY LUBE refill his truck with their crappy qrackerstate bulk oil.
Thats where he took his truck for every oil change since new... said it saved him a ton of money on oil changes...lol
When they took his hemi apart to inspect it, the sludge was so thick... then they decided not to even mess with it.
(30,000 an had severe damage to everything inside the engine, everything looked as though it had 200,000 miles on it)
So he bought a brand new crate engine... and noooooo, he dosent go to BIFFY BOOBOO anymore...lol
I sure hope they install a brand new oil pump if they rebuild his engine..!!!!

those kids that work in the oil change lane at most dealers are not trained as well as they should be, i used to hear them communicating out loud verifying each step so the obvious problems wont happen like starting without oil, they don't do that anymore
I removed the filter but couldn't really see anything wrong with it, so I reinstalled it. The leak persisted, so I removed it again and replaced it with another filter and that ended the leak. After close inspection comparing the private labeled oil filter with the correct Nissan type, I found the gasket diameter did not match.
I took this information back to the quick lube place and the manager, who was no kid by the way, was quite indignate and, although agreeing that his filter wasn't the right match to a Nissan filter, shrugged and said (direct quote), "That's the filter the company says to use and that's the one we're going to use."
I said, "Even though its going to leak?"
He looked me straight in the eye and said, "Yep. Even though it's going to leak."
