Default "ECO" vs. "ECO-ON" ...I'm confused

I just got a 2012 and on the evic a light says "eco" when I am driving easy. I assumed this meant economical as it does in most cars.

I am looking at the manual and the iphone manual app and it says the following:

"ECO"- Non Fuel Efficient driving. It means the fuel saver indicator is off.

"ECO-ON"- Fuel Efficient driving. It means the fuel saver indicator is on.

When I am driving hard it says nothing. When I coast or drive easy it says "ECO". It never says "ECO-ON".

Did they word the manuals wrong?

Screenshots taken from the RAM manual app. This is the exact same as in the hard manual that came with the truck.

I think it is just really poor documentation. I'd interpret the manual info to mean:

ECO Mode documentation:
- When 'ECO' indicator is on/visible you are driving in fuel-efficient manner
- When 'ECO' indicator is not visible you are not driving as efficiently
Unless the 2012 is significantly different (which doesn't appear to be the case, from your description of your truck) there are not two separate indicators. You're not going to see "ECO-ON" displayed anywhere, just "ECO".

I'll have to check mine again but I thought I was seeing
"ECO" just driving around
"ECO-ON" when lightfooting it
Not sure if it ever goes out completely?

PS: 1 month old '12 Express

Both my trucks will display ECO but I've never seen ECO-ON. The ST is a V-6 with non-EVIC display while the Sport has a hemi with the EVIC.

It should be going out. The ECO on both truck operate the same way where it will only illuminate under very light throttle condition or coasting.

Edit: Ok, curiosity got the best of me and so I took the ST for a quick drive and yes, on the non-EVIC display when you bring up 'ECO' it stays there and will change to 'ECO on' when under light throttle or coasting. So you are right.

My '12' Ram never says 'ECO-ON'. Either says nothing or 'ECO'
