Engine noise update: Collapsed lifters??
Took my 2009 Ram Hemi with 111,000 km (68,000 miles) to the local dealer today to diagnose a slight rattle/ticking at idle. Diagnosis is collapsed lifters - intake side - on cylinders 3 and 5. Dealer recommended replacing all 16 lifters. Cost for 16 lifters, head gasket, rocker gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, and labour...with 13% tax....$2,217.06. Powertrain warranty in Canada is 100,000 km so I'm 11,000 km out of warranty.
No explaination of how this could have happened. Truck has alwasy been run on 5W20 synthetic.
I told local dealer not to do the work. My buddy works at the dealership where I bought the truck (out of town) and I've sent him the information and he is seeing what kind of break they can give me.
I am also contacting Chrysler Canada to see about a goodwill policy.
Any thoughts?

Hopefully they will pro rate the charges since you are so close to the 100k mark.
On the collapsed lifters, I would expect a lot more loud clacking noise and a very rough running engine. Maybe lifters with the MDS are different.
Years ago I had rebuilt one of my engines (a Ford 302) with all new racing parts, cams, lifters, rods, pistons etc., started it up and it ran very healthy. ten minutes later a vibration started and then a clacking noise and it started to run very rough. Yup, a brand new collapsed lifter. Since it was so new I only replaced that one and never had any other problems from that engine.
If it really does turn out to be lifters I would put a complete set in. Not sure how cams are now-a-days, but in years past I would have put a new cam in also, but they were a lot cheaper back then also.
Keep us updated.

If this does turn out to be the proper diagnosis I would indeed suggest calling Chrysler Canada at 800-465-2001 to see if they will help in the repair.
Thanks, Chris. Katie from DodgeCACares saw my post(s) and sent me a PM requesting my VIN#. I believe she is looking into it. Should I also contact Chrysler Canada, or is this one and the same?
