2009 Ram 1500 5.7L - Poor gas mileage all of a sudden!
Hi Everyone,
Maybe you can help a brother out. I typically keep an eye on the MPG indicator and noticed this past week that my typical 16+ average MPG is struggling to stay above 12 MPG. I have reset the MPG indicator at various times, seeing it creep up into the neighborhood of 15 MPG, but it's back in the tubes by the time I finish my 16 mile flat land commute from work.
I have read on the Gen 2 forums that the MAP sensor is known to fail, resulting in poor mileage, but have not found anything on the Gen 4 forum pertaining to poor mileage.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Don't forget you are running winter blend gas now, that is good for a 1 to 2 mpg loss.
Also check to make sure you don't have a brake caliper hanging up, I have seen a couple posts on this killing mpg.
Just check the easy stuff, air filter, tire inflation and extra weight you don't normally carry, tune-up and anything else you can think of.

Mileage really sucks on winter blended gasoline, and cold engines. I wonder if it would be economically feasable to use a block heater, just to avoid the cold engine??????
When I read the thread title I though "winter blend fuel." The likely cause. Welcome to our lobbyist driven government mandating crappy fuel that reduces economy and likely causes more pollution than just using regular fuel.
I'm not cynical, just a realist. When you reduce economy 15-25% or more how can this blended fuel actually help the environment? Makes no sense to me. In fact I think MTBE causes more pollution that it supposedly saves.

No kidding, winter blend is suppose to cost less, a positive. However saving .13 cents (per gallon) at the pump doesn't equal the efficiency of reduced milage by 18%, a negative.

But I do agree with you on their whole "Save the environment" thing. They never look at costs to refine...
First off, I just joined Dodge Forum. I'm new to all this. I just traded in my 16mpg city/20+mpg hwy 04 4.7l club cab dakota in on a 2009 cc ram 1500 4x4 hemi. My first tank averaged 14mpg. I was shocked! It has 91,000 miles on it. Been well maintained by one owner same dealer every 3k with documentation. I thought with the MDS it would be better. I work 6 miles from home. So it isnt that much of an issue. But I bought it tow my camper next spring. Can ony imagine what thats going to be like. I was thinking of doing my exhaust, cai, and a programmer to help improve mileage driving daily and performance when it comes time to tow. any info would be helpful.
