I have a 2012 1500 Ram Sport with the 5.7 Hemi , 3.92 dif and 275/65/20 tires that is absolutely horrible in the snow. I can't pull anything even in a flat lot with 4 -6 of snow the truck just wants to spin. Tried more aggressive tires and made no difference. This is my first Dodge and possibly my last if I can't get this figured out. Don't get me wrong I love the truck other than this issue. I've driven trucks for over 35 years and never had this issue. I had a few people tell me I need to go to 17 or 18" narrower tires but it gets expensive to keep changing not knowing for sure that is the issue. The dealer has been no help!
I just heard there was a service bulletin about the clutch mechanism in the rear axle. Not sure all the details but it isn't engaging and it causes the truck to jump to the right when backing in slippery conditions which is what my truck does. Has anyone heard of this? mhelinski what snow conditions do you normally drive in? do you tow a trailer in the snow or pull people out of the snow? if so maybe the service bulletin above could be my issue. it's as close to a good answer as I've heard so far.

Back on 12/26/10 i was still in NYC and we got three feet of snow, so like in any pickup ive ever had , i put about 600lbs of sandbags against the bulkhead,and ripped through that crap like a CATD6....

It sits and spins? Traction control working? 'Cause mine won't spin for long before the trac control kicks in. Also Towing in 6" of snow is a bit different than just getting the truck alone moving. If you have a good tongue weight no need to put weight in the back. I think I would have problems with mine in 6" of snow, depending on whether it was wet or dry snow. I have Goodyear Silent Armours in the regular 20" size and mine did great in NH this year.
BTW I too put some sand tubes in the back to help get some weight to the rear tires.

old jeep I assure you it is not a driver issue. The truck is 4x4 and does the same in 2H , 4H + 4L. I have owned and driven many trucks but never experienced this unless of course the 4x4 wasn't activating. this seems to be but not operating correctly. I live in NY and trailer to the Tug Hill Plateau which gets a considerable amount of snow but it does the same in minimal snow depth. The tounge weight on the trailer should be more than enough about 500 - 600 lbs. The tires are Wild Peak but either way shouldn't make that much of a difference in minimal snow depths of 4-8"
