Just had a dumb thought, put higher viscocity oil in the truck that disables MSD and see what happens.

I will not be throwing parts at my truck. Cant afford to and dont have the time. I plan on isolating it before any repair is done. At this point the lifters seem like the most likely cause but im also thinking that is could be potential oil pressure issue. Maybe pump starting to get weak. also was thinking could be timing related. I drove up to the store today and thought it sounded like the f150 5.4L when the cam phasers go. maybe the chain is rattling or something. I will be driving it with a scan tool soon to see if anything looks obvious with the engine sensors. If mds is disabled it doesnt make the noise.

Hey Dusty
I bought it from a dealer for whole sale price. It has 187000 kms. I am in Canada.
Whew! Then it isn't my old truck.

Dusty

Based on what I've been told, using a heavier viscosity oil will throw a fault code, but I don't have any personal experience with that.

I've seen quite a few MDS equipped Hemis with well over 100,000 miles and mine was the only one to have this symptom.

Best regards,
Dusty

I was thinking that since the ticking goes away with MDS disabled, that using heavier oil, maybe 10-30, 10-40, may give an additional clue. I don't know what goes on electronically when one turns off MDS, probably multiple things that may or may not contribute to the noise. I was thinking that if he adds thicker oil, and the noise goes away when coasting (assuming that the eco indicator does not come on) that this may help narrow it down. The thicker oil would also affect the cam phaser.

So what if it throws a code, this would only be used as a temporary diagnostic aide.

Oh yeah, I saw where you were going with the suggestion.

I thought about doing that on my 2010, but as you've pointed out that could lead to other issues, too. Back when I owned Chevies that was the small block cure for punky hydraulic lifters!

I am now on my 3RD Dealer Service for MDS lifter noise. It happens when the throttle is unloaded and is particularly acute in the 1000 to 1500 RPM range. The first time they replaced a pushrod and all MDS lifters on one side. It was quiet for about a week then it came back. I took it back and they opened a star case on it. They had it for over a week and they replaced the same MDS lifters *again* and this time it was quiet for about one month. The problem has now returned loud as ever and my truck is in a different dealers bay. They have reopened a star case and are “concerned about the camshaft”. This means little to me at this point because they have been wrong every time so far. Interestingly enough, just like a previous poster on this issue, I also had a cylinder head replaced and that is when the ticking lifter issue started. After replacing 2 transmissions, a TQ converter, 2 injectors, one cylinder head, an ABS module, 2 AC units and one rear end I would think they are regretting the lifetime warranty……I have 59K on my 09 RAM. I told them to replace the entire engine or just buy my truck back; they are less than warm about either solution. I will post up what they change this time on the lifter ticking noise but it will be gone for another week or so again I am sure. As a side note, this service manager DID admit this exact issue has come up on a 2013 Hemi RAM and they have not conquered it yet either.

The problem with this issue is the very low incidence rate. So most dealers may only see this one or two times over several years. In my dealers case, out of the roughly 1700 trucks they've sold in four years, I was the only lucky one. This would not be an easy thing to troubleshoot, either.
I'm the one who mentioned earlier that the cylinder head was replaced. After my last repair my truck went eight months before hearing the noise again, and then I only heard it once.
If your technicians are thinking camshaft I really do suspect they're on the right track.

Good luck and best regards,
Dusty

UPDATE: Dealer is somewhat perplexed about the issue. They are going to replace the cam and EVERY lifter this time. Whether I like that or not.......it is now torn down and there is an issue getting the lifters.."at least 2 weeks".
To say I am tired of this issue is an understatement. A few of the Hemi's do have this problem and, from all I can glean, nether the dealers nor Detriot (with whom they have been communicating) seem to be able to find root cause. The dealer has been polite and put me in a new Dart SXT for the duration as a loaner.........but I miss my truck.

I'm sure a number of us would like to be kept informed on the progress of your repair.

Default Update

Hi guys. I just wanted to give an update on my 2010 ram with 188000kms that has this problem. I ran my truck on the hoist and listened to the engine with a stethascope. The noise seemed to sound the loudest from the timing cover area. I removed the timing cover and inspected the parts. I didnt see any obvious looseness in the chain but did notice some very slight wear in the chain guides. I replaced the chain, tensioner and quide. The chain quide has been updated. old guide was plastic and new one is metal. I also replaced the phaser and replaced the oil pump since the truck has high kms and the pump has to be removed to replaced the chain. since the repair i have put 250kms on it and havent heard the noise at all and i have been listening very close. So my thoughts are that the chain was rattling when it was in 4cyl mode and rpms where low enough. I will repost if the noise comes back but pretty sure that was it. Hopefully this helps.
