Default Tired of the lack of concern from the mechanics

I have had this same ticking issue with my 2010 ram 5.7 hemi. I have had two mechanics from the dealership take a ride with me to listen to the sound and have heard it, but being that it is not easily duplicated all the time they tell me not to worry about it and just to drive it like it is. NOT IMPRESSED. they get back to the dealership and acted as if they weren't confused about the noise and try to tell me it the echo from the building like i'm some sort of crazy hearing things, but the look on their faces when they first hear the noise says it all(confusion). welcome to my world, i've been stumped and about to buy a chevy because of this sort of treatment. I love my Dodge and would hate to switch but enough is enough, just want it fixed. hope someone is able to find the definite problem before I give up.

My suggestion is to talk to the service manager very politely let her or him know there is something wrong with your truck and wish to know how they intend to resolve this issue. If the service manager seems complacent, inform him VERY POLITELY that you will escalate directly to Chrysler.

Best regards,
Dusty

I'll make sure to tell them that seeing as they had it for a week and have no clue what it is. They've been talking to chrysler and chrysler is saying that noise is normal in eco mode. So now the dealershipus fighting with chrysler telling them its not a normal noise and that none of the other trucks on the lot make that noise. So I will be sure to tell them what you said. Thank you.

Thanks for the comment, but it leaves a question. Have you ever submitted a Star Case for this issue, because you are the first Chrysler tech. I've heard say they knew what the problem was. Based on what I know a lot of lifters and camshafts have been replaced on account of this symptom.

What happens to the tensioner that causes this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Dusty

Hi Guys,

I had the same problem with the MDS ticking really bad. I had taken it to three dealerships and as well as gotten Chrysler techs involved. From the research I put into this is the lifters and some rod in the motor has to be replaced but the problem is its a minor fix. I heard it comes back. I haven't looked into anymore as I got rid of that truck and will never trust the people I talked to as stating to the customer it's Normal and especially getting Chrysler techs from HQ to drive it they also say it's Normal yet it's not as the more you drive on the bad MDS lifters well it caused other major wear on more internal motor parts. So I got rid of my ram because of this problem and will not buy a hemi again. I now own a 2013 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman v6 3.6 4x4 and it's absolutely awesome.

Omg guys . Exact same thing here for me. Have taken truck to three dealers and have gotten Chrysler involved. All of them haven't a clue and tell me to just drive it. It's frustrating having to drive a 50,000 truck with that noise. So annoying and frustrating. Obviously it seems to be a mds issue, it will stop with tow haul engaged or put into neutral as previously mentioned. This isant a faint sound either! What can be done? It seems that there is enough folks with this issue now and should send red flags to Chrysler! It's unfair to drive my truck the way it is after spend top dollar on it. To get service that I paid for I have to bring to the dealer but they don't have a clue, but suggest with an ignorant comment like I should trade it in. I'm ready to drive it off a cliff. At least I'm not the only one now!! Please any help would be great guys!

It would be helpful to know exactly what actions the service people did and what, if any, repairs were attempted.

Default Ticking sound

I've fought this issue for over a year with the dealership and Chrysler corporate. They changed the lifters twice, changed the transfer case, looked at my e-brake for some reason and the exhaust manifold. Eventually I threw out the idea of the timing chain guide and tensioner and they looked into it. Either that wasn't the problem or they didn't want to fix it because Crystler called and said they were adopting the noise as a normal Eco mode noise. The dealership I was dealing with didn't like that answer so they bought the truck back from me and put me in a new 2014 for the same price and this truck rides beautifully. Night and day difference between the two. But I've heard from here and other places that the timing chain tensioner might be the problem.

Apparently my 2010 was one of the first to suffer from this problem and the technicians ended up replacing a cylinder head, valves, MDS lifters and oil control solenoids. The problem came back after about 8000 miles. I really suspected the camshaft since I learned that there was national usage on that component. However, I recently talked to a CDJR technician in another part of the state and he claimed that the timing chains and tensioners are the problem. He didn't mention the phaser, but I can see it could be a problem, too. There was a recall for the tensioners on non-Ram 5.7 motors, but I was told they eliminated the plastic guides.

So far haven't heard anything like that on my 2014, but based on my experience this symptom only starts to occur after 70-80K miles.

Dusty
