I didnt see any obvious looseness in the chain but did notice some very slight wear in the chain guides. I replaced the chain, tensioner and quide. The chain quide has been updated. old guide was plastic and new one is metal. I also replaced the phaser and replaced the oil pump since the truck has high kms and the pump has to be removed to replaced the chain. since the repair i have put 250kms on it and havent heard the noise at all and i have been listening very close. So my thoughts are that the chain was rattling when it was in 4cyl mode and rpms where low enough. I will repost if the noise comes back but pretty sure that was it. Hopefully this helps.
Very interesting!
Trying to understand the dynamics of the chain guides and the issue at hand, but the real test is success. We'll be more interested in knowing the effects of what you did in several thousand kilometers.
Please keep us posted.

I have the same issue with my 2010 ram big horn. I get loud ticking when coasting in mds mode. I had the lifters changed and that seemed to work for about a month and got the ticking again. So the dealership put another new set of lifter in my truck. They said the lifters they took out were scuffed from normal wear and tear...is that normal for only being a month old? And now with the lifters only being a couple days old, I still get a ticking like a baseball card in spokes when coasting. And again this only happens when it's in eco mode and shifts into 4th gear. I'm at a loss for what it could be. This is the 3rd time having it in the dealership for the issue.

I had this ticking problem twice with my 07 dakota.
fixed it both times my self..

had it first time two years ago, ended up being my front drive shaft,
replaced stock one with a new one with double u-joint.

a year later same noise.. didn't think it could be drive shaft again because I'd just replaced it...talked to many friends and some of them mechanics, all doubting the drive shaft when hearing noise...me suggesting to just take it out in an attempt to eliminate the noise...they told me to attempt simpler trial an errors first..
being stubborn, I ended up taking it out in my girlfriends driveway after work cause i was so rattled.. and voila, after an hour wrestling with it , drove around the block , SILENCE ..one of the u-joints was gone ..

to POSTER not sure if you solved it or not..
OR
anyone else who experiences a metal ticking/tinging noise from front end while coasting ( cant hear it over engine most likely) and the ticking accelerates or decelerates with speed you are going, could be front drive shaft!

I just have to get it back in before winter..

and a question if anyone reading this...

why would a brand new driveshaft u-joint go within a year? not maintained/greased nipples? or just the fact of using new parts on older vehicles ?

The drive shaft and u joints are a thought but wouldn't it be happening all the time and not just eco mode, that's what's getting me. It only happens when it shifts down into that low 4th gear in eco mode. As soon as it pops out of eco mode the noise goes away.

Update on this issue - Lifter noise only in MDS mode when coasting (no gas being applied). It was particularly acute at 1500 RPM’s or under.

The first 2 attempts at repair were done by another dealer, they did confirm the issue each time. The first time they replaced a couple MDS lifters along with some pushrods on one side of the engine. The noise was gone for less than a week then it came back. The second attempt at repair they replaced the same MDS lifters again, this time the noise was gone for almost 3 weeks before it returned louder than ever.

The 3rd repair attempt was performed by another dealer, they too confirmed the issue. They also speculated the cam might be at fault. After 25 days due to waiting on MDS lifters I got the truck back. The exact service notes on the invoice, in part, read:

“Removed camshaft and found cam lobes scored” “removed and found lifters soft and locks on some MDS lifters pin out of notch and found some rollers loose and scored”

I am not sure what “soft” lifters are nor what out of notch means but I do know scored cam lobes and scored/loose lifter rollers means something went horribly wrong in there. It has been almost 4 weeks since the last repair now and the issue seems resolved. Since a few others have experienced this problem I cannot help but suspect this a design or manufacturing issue? One thing that was made clear to me was that the cam should have been replaced on the first repair as it likely continued to take out the new and used lifters. I hope this may help others with the same issue and wonder if this fix works for them as well.

Greatly appreciate the update. While doing my research I discovered that just under 40 camshafts were being used monthly per month for 2009-2010 5.7 Hemi Rams nationally. Because camshafts are rarely an issue on Chrysler products, this made me very suspicious. Since this problem appears to affect only a small portion of the 5.7 truck motors, I'm thinking that at some point they had a hardening issue which was not readily detected. I've not heard of this symptom occurring on 2011-2014s, and not on cars at all.

The reference to "soft" lifters may relate to the spring inside the lifter body.

Default ok so the dealership figured out my ticking issue in mds mode.

So I had my truck in the dealerships 4 times for the ticking, they replaced the lifters twice and then sent me home the 3rd time saying there was nothing they could do. So I made a phone call to the owner of the dealership and my truck was back the next day. They put my truck on the lift and found the ticing coming from my transfer case. They inspected it and found that the chain was loose and slapping against the case. So they're putting a new transfer case in we'll see how that goes.

Well the transfer case was not the problem, as soon as I pulled out of the dealership it started ticking again. I'm at a loss right now, and thinking about just getting rid of the damn thing.

I would really have to question this dealerships diagnostic skills...and replacing the whole transfer case because they thought the chain was slapping (is that even possible?) seems like overkill. Sounds more like a torque converter or flywheel issue to me.

I was tempted to respond when I saw your earlier post that they were going to replace the transfer case for this problem and cast serious doubt on any success. The transfer case as a source most certainly doesn't explain this problem occurring in two-wheel drive vehicles, which a number of us have, and all symptoms point to the MDS as the trigger.

I'm not sure how the technicians could've reached the conclusion they did, but in my opinion it's time to open a Star Case and get some engineering support.

One poster in this thread has indicated that after replacing the MDS lifters and solenoids, the issue has since gone away when the cam phaser and engine timing chain was replaced.

I'm hoping someone at Chrysler is reading these posts.

Good luck,
Dusty
